Abstract
CHAIA - Centre for Art History and Artistic Research is a multidisciplinary research unit of the University of Évora dedicated to the study of the arts, architecture, and landscape, from a heritage (historical, archaeological, and critical) and creative perspective (process-oriented and by design), over a long period of time, from prehistory to contemporary times. Its current strategy is centred on studying and exploring the ways in which the interconnection between arts, heritage and communities had, has, and can have - in the past, present and future - a fundamental contribution to shaping cultural, social, political and economic dynamics, namely:
- in the formation and expression of Cultural Identities.
- social and economic integration and cohesion.
- environmental sustainability.
- education and lifelong training.
CHAIA includes researchersfrom seven disciplinary fields (Archaeology, Architecture, Art History, Design, Landscape Architecture, Philosophy, Theatre, and Visual Arts), from twelve national institutions (six higher education and six cultural management), organised into seven research groups: Archaeology, Architecture, Art History, Design, Landscape, Theatre and Performance Studies, and Visual Arts. Its mission is to promote, develop and support, on a local, national and international scale, projects and activities for research, dissemination and artistic and scientific diffusion (conferences, seminars, workshops, debates, publications, exhibitions, videos, websites, etc.), as well as collaboration with the different undergraduate and postgraduate training cycles at the University of Évora, with emphasis on participation in five doctoral programmes: Archaeology, Architecture, Arts and Design (with three areas of specialisation: Visual Arts, Design and Theatre), Landscape Arts and Techniques and History of Art.
CHAIA is a member of:
- the Associated Laboratory IN2PAST - Research and Innovation in Heritage, Arts, Sustainability and Territory, which brings together researchers from seven research units at five Portuguese universities, and whose main objective is to actively contribute to public policies in its areas of intervention.
- DEGREN+ - Cross-border Network for Business Innovation in Eco-design in EUROACE - Green Design and Engineering, made up of nine organisations (four Portuguese and five Spanish), which aims to incorporate eco-design into the products and services of companies within this Euroregion: The Centre and South (Alentejo) of Portugal and the Autonomous Community of Extremadura (Spain).
