Abstract

CMUP has earned over the last two decades the status of an internationally highly regarded research school on Mathematics, in a broad sense. CMUP is now internationally identified as an R&D unit which contributes to and defines the state-of-the-art in several mathematical areas. During the last 5 years, CMUP has achieved an excellent publication record and published outstanding mathematical contributions; furthermore, it has secured substantial competitive funding, participated in important research networks and attracted many PhD students and postdoctoral fellows. CMUP’s main goals for the next 5 years are to strengthen its present level of excellency, to promote a stimulatingscientific environment among its members and to consolidate its recognition as a competitive, relevant and up-to-date mathematical centre, whose members address important contemporary problems, work across disciplines, foster applications and maintain high-impact research outputs. It is fair to say that CMUP has also potential for both increasing synergies between research teams and for building on existing strengths to advance its cutting-edge research in new directions. Therefore, besides reinforcing its most successful lines of research and encouraging other promising fields, CMUP is determined to invigorate its bonds with international research networks, to engage in major applied mathematical topics and to lay the grounds for new research directions. CMUP’s activity plan for the next 5 years endorses a demanding hiring schedule of highly qualified researchers, by opening regular fixed-term positions for recent PhD holders and by carrying out a consistent postdoctoral hiring strategy, which is able to attract senior researchers with exceptional scientific profile, whose work is aligned with the strategic research aims of the centre, and are capable of stimulating scientific cooperation and pursue funding opportunities. Equally important, the multi-annual funding plan comprises a renewal process of the permanent staff and an instrument for stabilizing research careers over time. This means that the human resources item of CMUP’s proposed budget will be one of its strategic priorities, complemented by a thorough encouragement for CMUP’s members to participate in national and international projects having CMUP as host or partner research unit. In particular, CMUP wishes to establish robust connections between the more traditional research, focused on fundamental mathematics, and the new trend of machine learning, thus complying with the aims of the recent affiliation of CMUP to the Intelligent Systems Associate Laboratory. CMUP supports 4 PhD programs and has a known tradition in outreach activities. It plans to maintain these efforts in order to reach wider audiences and attract talented students. The success of this endeavour ultimately depends on the quality of CMUP’s team of researchers, which forms the backbone of the academic faculty of these programmes.
