Abstract

SYSTEC, Research Center for Systems and Technologies, comprises a multidisciplinary team in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Informatics Engineering, and Applied Mathematics. The center's goals include fostering academic excellence, establishing worldwide collaborations, engaging with stakeholders for challenge-driven innovation, advancing R&D boundaries aligned with Sustainable Development Goals, and integrating advanced training activities. To pursue these objectives, SYSTEC's strategic plan for 2025-2029 includes: O1. Advancement of Scientific & Technological State-of-the-Art: - SYSTEC focuses on three key intervention areas: Control and Networked Dynamical Systems, Industrial Informatics and Cyber-physical Systems, and Energy Systems and Smart Cities. - In each domain, SYSTEC conducts groundbreaking research, addressing fundamental issues while ensuring practical applicability. O2. Training and Promotion of Highly Qualified Scientific Employment: - SYSTEC prioritizes fostering scientific talent and attracting international researchers to Portugal through doctoral programs and comprehensive training initiatives. - The aim is to increase the recruitment of PhD students and holders, with a focus on transitioning fixed contracts to permanent positions. - Individual Career Development Plans (CDPs) are tailored to each researcher, encompassing research tasks, skills training, networking opportunities, and technology transfer incentives. O3. Promotion of National R&D&I Initiatives and Outreach to Societal and Economic Actors: - SYSTEC collaborates with institutions like ARISE to promote national R&D initiatives and facilitate inter-institutional collaboration. - Strong partnerships with national organizations are emphasized, focusing on bridging academia-industry gaps and securing funding for R&D projects. - The strategy aims to strengthen societal impact and foster innovation. O4. Internationalization and Impact: - SYSTEC seeks to broaden the influence of national R&D efforts globally through strategic scientific collaborations and partnerships. - By aligning with the UN Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, SYSTEC aims to address global challenges like climate change and sustainable industrialization. - International networking efforts aim to position the University of Porto as a hub for scientific excellence and technological innovation. O5. Alignment with Public Policies: - SYSTEC's research aligns closely with national and international policy agendas, focusing on carbon neutrality, circular economy, and sustainable energy systems. - Collaboration with ARISE and other institutions supports the shaping of public policies addressing social, environmental, and economic challenges. In conclusion, SYSTEC's objectives for 2025-2029 reflect a holistic approach to advancing science and technology, addressing societal needs, and fostering international collaboration and talent development.
