Abstract
IFILNOVA’s main task for 2025-2029 is to develop fundamental research into the philosophical problem of values, as well as new ideas, methods and interdisciplinary strategies geared towards the societal impact of such research. The strategy designed to achieve these tasks can be summarised by the following objectives:
1. Research and Dissemination
2. Publication
3. Training
4. Employment
1. IFILNOVA intends to continue developing research projects funded by external organisations. IFILNOVA’s four scientific laboratories have a total of 7 projects underway and 6 projects submitted. IFILNOVA's strategy for achieving its main objectives in the 2025-2029 period consists of developing these 13 projects. Among the projects underway is the first ERC Consolidator Grant in film philosophy. Another highlight is the "ANTIDOTE" project, funded by Horizon Europe as part of the CHIST-ERA consortium. All of the institute's scientific laboratories have projects underway, and all of the research groups maintain multiple active partnerships with international research groups and other national and foreign universities.
2. In the period 2025-2029, IFILNOVA intends to continue publishing results in the best scientific journals and in the best national and international publishers, as well as achieving internationally recognised excellence in all areas of its research.
3. IFILNOVA aims to provide advanced training through the award and scientific supervision of doctoral scholarships within the framework of 3 doctoral programmes at NOVA FCSH: Philosophy, Communication Sciences, and Artistic Studies. All these doctoral programmes are coordinated by IFILNOVA researchers. The Master's programmes in Philosophy and in Artistic Studies are also coordinated by IFILNOVA researchers. Several IFILNOVA researchers teach in these programmes, as well as in the Masters in Communication Sciences. IFILNOVA is now applying for funding for the award of 16 PhD scholarships (having had funding for 8 in the 2020-2023 period) and for the award of 30 research scholarships for students enrolled in the above-mentioned master's programmes (having had funding for 20 in the 2018-2023 period).
4. In this application for funding, IFILNOVA is presenting an ambitious hiring plan under the FCT-Tenure programme. This plan includes 10 chairs spread across 4 departments at NOVA FCSH (philosophy, communication sciences, literary studies, education) and 6 research chairs (in philosophy of values, philosophy of film, philosophy of mind and language, ethics, aesthetics, and Nietzsche studies). The plan also includes the hiring of 8 junior researchers, 2 for each of the institute's scientific laboratories. One of IFILNOVA's main tasks in recent years has been to create a new generation of philosophers doing research in Portugal. The award of 16 permanent positions under the FCT-Tenure programme will consolidate IFILNOVA's position as one of the leading European research centres in philosophy.
