Abstract

The Centre of Linguistics of the University of Lisbon (CLUL) is a unit of the School of Arts and Humanities (FLUL) committed to leading research on Portuguese and Portuguese-related languages, that combines theoretical, applied and experimental research, and fieldwork, archive and computer-based treatment of language data. CLUL’s team has 85 integrated PhD researchers and 67 collaborators organized in 5 research groups: Dialectology& Diachrony; Grammar & Resources; Phonetics and Phonology Lab; Psycholinguistics Lab; Philology. CLUL’s main goals for 2025-2029 are structured around three major strategic research pillars: 1. Language, Cultural Heritage and Inclusive Societies (LaHIS). Research in this pillar will focus on (i) documentation and grammatical description of understudied varieties of Portuguese (PT) and creole languages, (ii) description and formal analysis of language variation in space and time, (iii) studies and resources for PT L2/foreign language teaching, and (iv) workon PT textual legacy. The LaHIS pillar is central to strengthen CLUL’s position at the forefront of the preservation of the Portuguese-related linguistic heritage. 2. Language and Digital Technologies (LaDiT). Research in this pillar will promote data curation, extension, refinement, and recycling of digital resources, and the creation of novel resources. The LaDiT pillar is central to strengthen CLUL’s leading role in producing resources for PT and Portuguese-related languages. 3. Language and Communication in Acquisition, Development, and Aging (LaCADA). Research in this pillar will focus on (i) language acquisition in multilingual settings and in (a)typical development, (ii) infant speech processing, (iii) language assessment tools and interventions to support language development, and (iv) language processing during the lifespan. The LaCADA pillar is key to CLUL’s leading position in experimental research on PT and Portuguese-related languages. CLUL’s strategy to achieve these goals combines interdisciplinarity, internationalization and sustainable science, through increasing international collaborations and participation in networks, the hiring of human resources with diverse expertise, and a strong commitment to open access policies, translational research, and evidence-based social awareness. The allocation of specific funding for human resources and advanced training in the programmatic funding is an essential mean to attain these goals, together with the proposed internal stimulus to excellent research projects. CLUL sees service to the community as an important part of its research activities, and plans to continue to ensure the application of the outcomes of its research to societal demands. The report on the main contributions and activities of the unit in the previous years is a sound assurance of CLUL's ability to attain the expected high-level research planned for 2025-2029.
