Abstract
Centre for Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Processes (CEMMPRE) is an interdisciplinary R&D Unit comprising 94 integrated researchers with PhDs, 108 PhD students, and 70 collaborators. Its activity is centred on fundamental and applied research in Mechanical and Materials Engineering with focus on the twinning transition (digital and green). The research aligns with regional (EREI) and national (ENEI) RIS3, Horizon Europe, and the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda.
Organized into two research groups - Mechanical and Intelligent Manufacturing (Group A), Materials andProcesses (Group B) - CEMMPRE conducts research in eight major scientific areas, covering mechanical models and design, mechanics and manufacturing, robotics, operations management, synthesis, materials functionalization, materials and manufacturing, and bioengineering. CEMMPRE joined forces with four other R&D units to establish in 2021 the Advanced Production and Intelligent Systems (ARISE) Associated Laboratory (AL) from FCT.
Over the next five years, CEMMPRE aims to enhance its scientific and technological contributions within its research domains. Key objectives include advancing research actions with regional, national, and global impact; enhancing internal organization and visibility; elevating research quality metrics; fostering recruitment of graduate students and skilled researchers; sustaining collaborative research facilities; and strengthening ARISE's position as a leader in decision-making in Portugal within advanced manufacturing.
The research agenda will address societal and social policy concerns while promoting the creation and development of new sustainable technologies and advanced materials. Leveraging several key strengths – including ongoing funding from both public and private institutions/companies, multidisciplinary expertise, robust collaborations with international institutions and networks of excellence, integration in ARISE-AL, and access to modern and well-equipped laboratories –CEMMPRE will prioritize enhancing international recognition while fostering impactful collaborations with industrial partners to ensure both societal and economic benefits. Besides the eight major scientific areas presented above, CEMMPRE has identified hot topics for its internationalization strategic plan, including: Artificial Intelligence (extension to other fields), Additive Manufacturing (bioprinting, high-entropy alloys (HEA), metamaterials), Energy (batteries, H2), Environment (water, decarbonization). The research outcomes are anticipated to hold potential for applications and impact in: Energy, Environment, Health and well-being, Transportation and mobility, and Sustainable industrialization.
