Abstract
The CEG is a R&D unit integrated into the IGOT-ULisboa and stands as the primary reference in research and dissemination of geographical knowledge in Portugal, with broad international recognition. Since 2021, it has been part of the TERRA Associated Laboratory. The CEG's mission is the development of research in Geography and the promotion and dissemination of geographical knowledge, aiming to contribute to the development of communities and regions, proper territorial planning, the sustainability of environmental resources, and spatial justice at various scales.
The CEG hosts 67 PhD-holder researchers, over 60 PhD candidates, several scholarship holders attending master's programs, and about 70 collaborators, organized into 6 research groups (RGs) that conduct internationally oriented research on: climate change and environmental systems (ZEPHYRUS), risk assessment and management (RISKam), modelling and spatial management and planning (MOPT), urban and regional change and policies (ZOE), migration, spaces and societies (MIGRARE), and tourism, heritage and space (TERRITUR).
From 2018 to 2023, the CEG participated in 121 research and consultancy contracts and secured a total funding of €8.4 million. Throughout the same timeframe, CEG researchers authored a total of 557 scholarly articles featured in journals indexed by WoS or Scopus, with over fifty percent appearing in Q1 journals. The scientific performance of the CEG has significantly contributed to the prominent position of ULisboa's Geography in the major international rankings (76th worldwide, 12th in the EU in the 2023 Shanghai Ranking; 26th worldwide, 7th in Western Europe, 1st in the Ibero-American space in the SCImago SIR 2024).
The CEG is strongly committed to graduate and postgraduate training and the integration of early career researchers, contributing to 7 doctoral programs and 6 master's programs at IGOT. Between 2018 and 2023, CEG researchers successfully supervised 70 PhD theses and 290 master's dissertations.
The outreach activities include projects with NGOs and local/national bodies, contributing to public policies, the planning process, and the level of public participation.
The CEG has a strong foundation, anchored in established objectives to promote high-quality research, foster international collaborations, enhance postgraduate education, diversify funding sources, improve research support infrastructure, expand social impact, and adhere to open science policies.
The CEG's strategy for 2025-29 aims to integrate geographical research with territorial development focusing on four thematic agendas, which are aligned with the UN's SDGs and the overall objectives of the European Green Deal:
A) Sustainability, Development in Transition, and Planning
B) Digital Innovation and Geospatial Technologies
C) Climate Change, Risk, and Extreme Environments
D) Spatial Justice, Citizenship, and Inclusion
