Abstract

The Center for Mathematics and Applications (NOVA Math) is the R&D unit of NOVA School of Science and Technology (NOVA FCT), dedicated to advancing knowledge and developing cutting-edge research in Mathematics and its applications. For 2025-2029, NOVA Math counts with a team of 85 PhD Integrated Researchers and 35 Collaborators, including 17 PhD Students, organized in four Research Groups: Algebra and Logic, Analysis, Operations Research, Statistics and Risk Management. In addition, two Thematic Lines are anticipated, namely Data Science and Mathematics forHealth and Biological Sciences. High-quality research activities will proceed, with corresponding publication in respectable scientific forums valued by the existence of a productivity criterion. Publications will explore the Open Access options available through Plan S, in addition to open-access archives. Software development, with code mostly made freely available, will continue to be one of the relevant activities of NOVA Math. The center benefits from the scientific environment of NOVA FCT, interacting with research from different fields, particularly with Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and Computer Science. Furthermore, participation in interdisciplinary projects at NOVA University of Lisbon is facilitated by several institutional platforms, as is the case of NOVA Health. NOVA Math intends to strength collaboration with other R&D units. The attraction and retention of talent inside the unit is a major concern. Permanent positions are planned, co-funded by NOVA Math, under the FCT-Tenure program. NOVA Math commits to an inclusive, diverse, and equal opportunities working environment, ensuring fair systems for selection and merit promotion. Special programs will be developed to support students’ research activities. The center intends to continue to take advantage of the FCT national call for PhD scholarships, both in academic and non-academic lines. The unit will invest in advanced training and several post-doc positions can be anticipated for the next five years. NOVA Math researchers will continue to serve the mathematical community as board members of scientific associations, associate editors of journals, or in organizing and scientific committees of meetings. Seminars will occur regularly, hosted by the Research Groups or the Thematic Lines. In collaboration with the Department of Mathematics or the National Agency for Scientific Culture (Ciência Viva), outreach activities will be developed with the participation of NOVA Math members. MatNova, MathIngenious, are examples of annual Summer Schools dedicated to high school students, inspiring young students to pursue scientific careers in Mathematics. Europeans’ Researchers Night, Week of Science and Technology, are initiatives of Ciência Viva, dedicated to society, always counting on the participation of NOVA Math.
