Abstract

The Research Centre on Child Studies (CIEC) (FCT Unit 317) was founded in 2011 with the aim of improving understanding of children’s lives and contributing to their learning, development and wellbeing. It is the only research centre of its kind in Portugal with a clear focus on activities which have a strong international dimension. Scientific research and advanced training and development of researchers and professionals working with children are two key features of the Centre’s activity. The Centre adopts a multi and interdisciplinary approach to developing knowledge within a holistic perspective that sees children as social actors who relate to the society and culture in which they are situated. Research also focuses on the views of the adults with whom children interact, such as educators, teachers, families, care and health professionals. The Centre is actively engaged in advancing research that promotes policies, rights, cultures and practices aimed at improving the living conditions of children, particularly in contexts of social vulnerability. It also supports the professionals who work with children by investigating the conditions and contexts of their activity and by providing them with education and professional development opportunities. As the Centre follows an inter/multidisciplinary approach, emphasis is placed on collaboration and on interdisciplinary projects and teams. The Centre is organised into three Research Communities (RC): RC1 - Children’s contexts, their everyday life and wellbeing; RC2 - Children’s learning and development; and RC3 - Childhood professionals, families and communities. The Centre has a close connection with the Doctoral Programme in Child Studies which includes five areas of specialisation: Childhood, Cultures and Society; Physical Education and Child Health; Artistic Education; Childhood, Development and Learning, and Special Education. The Doctoral programme has always been coordinated by one of CIEC’s PhD integrated researchers and all of the coordinators of the five areas of specialisation are PhD integrated researchers. In terms of its main activities, the Centre carries out: i) internationalisation; ii) research projects led by its members as well as participating in national and international projects with external funded; iii) scientific production and contribution to the field; iv) advanced training and liaison with the Doctoral Programme in Child Studies; v) public engagement, knowledge transfer and social impact.
