Abstract
ALGORITMI is a research unit of the School of Engineering of the University of Minho, which, within the scope of Information Technologies, Communications and Electronics (TICE), develops R&D activity in six major areas:
(1) Computer Science and Technology (CST);
(2) Information Technologies and Systems (IST);
(3) Computer Communications and Pervasive Media (CCPM);
(4) Industrial Electronics (IE);
(5) Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM);
(6) Systems Engineering and Operational Research (SEOR).
Most of the Centre's PhD researchers are also members of the teaching staff of four of the School of Engineering's departments: Industrial Electronics (DEI), Information Systems (DSI), Production and Systems (DPS), Computer Science (DI). In addition, master's and doctoral projects supervised by lecturers from these four departments who are also researchers at the Centre are developed at ALGORITMI.
In ALGORITMI's internal designation, there are 6 R&D groups and 15 Laboratories, which are our research sub-groups. In ALGORITMI's R&D structure, the CST, IST and CCPM Groups integrate the majority of researchers in subjects related to Computer Engineering and Information Technologies. The IEM and SEOR R&D Groups are complementary and include the majority of researchers in systems engineering and industrial engineering and management. The IE R&D Group includes researchers dedicated to electronic and electrotechnical engineering. Some of these researchers are also motivated by Information and Communication Technology issues. ALGORITMI is also organised into 15 Laboratories, covering innovative topics and contributing intensively to the acquisition of knowledge within ALGORITMI and its multi-disciplinary R&D groups.
LGORITMI focuses its activity on projects with a strong connection to the community, e.g. industry and public administration. The University of Minho is located in an industrialised region with an important presence in the textile and footwear industries and in ICT service companies. The automotive industry has also gained a strong foothold in local activity. Another external factor that has influenced the field of application is the growth of the region's cities, which has promoted co-operation between various researchers in order to work in areas such as logistics, communications, e-government, health and resource management. The results of this strategy are demonstrated by the number of applied research projects in collaboration with companies and by national and international projects. In previous external evaluations, the Centre has always been rated very positively.
