Abstract

Established over 45 years ago, the Centre for Mathematics of the University of Coimbra (CMUC) stands as a distinguished research unit within the UCoimbra, specializing in Mathematics. CMUC is dedicated to both research and advanced training endeavours. With a team of over sixty researchers, it is currently structured into six research groups spanning critical areas of Mathematics: Algebra and Combinatorics; Algebra, Logic, and Topology; Analysis; Geometry; Numerical Analysis and Optimization; Probability and Statistics. Each of these groups actively engages in international research networks, boasting members who are leaders in their respective fields of study. The Laboratory of Computational Mathematics (LCM) is transversal to the research groups and develops interdisciplinary research, high-performance computing, and numerical software, in collaboration with the industry, and provides support for graduate education. CMUC organises regular seminars in each research group and a colloquium. CMUC regularly opens calls for postdoctoral fellowships and postgraduate education and is associated with the UC|UP PhD Program in Mathematics (www.mat.uc.pt/phd_prog), an FCT PhD program based on the research teams of CMUC and the Centre for Mathematics of the University of Porto. CMUC also has three lines of transversal activities: Computational Mathematics, Outreach and Popularization of Mathematics, and History of Mathematics. The work on Computational Mathematics is framed by LCM ( see www.mat.uc.pt/~cmuc/lcm). It promotes interdisciplinary research and transfer of mathematical knowledge in problems in the areas of Science, Engineering, Industry, Medicine, Finance, and Management. These activities provide postgraduate and postdoctoral students with unique opportunities to carry out non-academic research. Outreach activities (see www.mat.uc.pt/~cmuc/OA) include the organization and scientific coordination of the Portuguese Mathematical Olympiad, the Math Kangaroo and other mathematical competitions (at national and international level), the Delfos School, a school founded in 2001 to teach exceptional high school students and to prepare them for International Math Olympiads. It is nowadays supplemented by the Delfos Junior School, aimed at younger students. With a constant attentiveness to issues related to the teaching of Mathematics, the Centre also organises several regular programs of talks, lectures, exhibitions, and debates, mainly in elementary and secondary schools, but also addressed to the general public, some of which in collaboration with the Portuguese Mathematical Society, the UC Science Museum and the UC Exploratorium. The work on the History of Mathematics, carried out by a small number of researchers, focuses on the study of relevant contributions to the progress of Mathematics made by a few Portuguese mathematicians of the past: see www.mat.uc.pt/~cmuc/HM.
