Abstract

CE3C, Centre for Ecology Evolution and Environmental Changes, is a large R&D unit based at the Faculty of Sciences-ULisboa (FCUL) and at UAçores. We are at the forefront of ecological, evolutionary and global changes research in Portugal, committed to shaping a safer and more sustainable future. CE3C pursues top-level science, transcending disciplinary boundaries to address global changes. Our diverse scientific community drives innovation by performing multidisciplinary fundamental and applied research. Our work contributes to the understanding of how biological systems function and adapt and helps designing measures to reduce the impacts of environmental changes on biodiversity, planetary health, and overall well-being. We integrate life and climate sciences and by exploring ecological functions and evolutionary dynamics we deepen the understanding of emergent environmental issues, with a focus on island, tropical, semi-arid and Mediterranean ecosystems, both natural and anthropogenic. Beyond academia, CE3C actively engages with industry, non-academic public institutions, and policymakers, facilitating knowledge and technology transfer, tackling ecological challenges, supporting R&D initiatives, sharing data and tools, and developing educational programs. As a partner of the Associate Laboratory CHANGE - Global Changes and Sustainability Institute, CE3C collaborates to deliver policy solutions for environmentally friendly, resource-efficient, and competitive economies. We foster a culture of action in the search for funding opportunities, nurturing long-term positions and talent across all career levels, empowering researchers to evolve in their expertise and drive impactful advancements within our core domains. CE3C’s commitment to science communication and outreach amplifies the impact of our research, fostering social engagement and cultivating valuable partnerships and dialogues. Our citizen science initiatives bridge the gap between scientists and non-specialised audiences, promoting collaboration and mutual understanding. CE3C upholds open science practices and adheres to FAIR principles, ensuring transparency and accessibility in our scientific activities. CE3C is dedicated to shaping a safe and sustainable future through cutting-edge research, collaboration, and societal engagement, with a strong emphasis on excellence, impact, and inclusiveness.
