Abstract

LASIGE is a Computer Science and Engineering research unit hosted at Ciências ULisboa that comprises people who work together to produce high-quality research with scientific and societal impact. LASIGE’s strategy for scientific excellence and international recognition is focused on attracting and developing talent in target computer science areas, promoting ample opportunities for cross-pollination. LASIGE embraces radical multidisciplinarity with key applications in other areas of science. An active concern for societal impact permeates LASIGE’s research, with widespread efforts on community engagement, outreach and policymaking. LASIGE's roadmap for the upcoming five years underscores its unwavering pursuit of excellence and its distinct core principles: 1) situated within a School of Science, LASIGE upholds theoretical and empirical rigour in Computer Science and Engineering, championing the highest standards of academic research; 2) LASIGE's research ethos revolves around driving tangible societal change, fostering close collaboration and engagement with diverse communities of practice; and 3) embracing radical multidisciplinarity, LASIGE serves as a nexus for diverse perspectives, actively welcoming and integrating varied viewpoints to tackle complex challenges in computer science and its applications in other areas of science. Building upon its existing strengths, LASIGE delineates five strategic research areas addressing emerging challenges and capitalising on interdisciplinarity: Human-centred AI& XR, AI for Science and Health, Security and Privacy in Decentralized and AI-based Systems, Theory and Practice in Software Systems, and Sustainable Computing. LASIGE will continue advocating a scientific culture that (I) promotes quality, merit, and relevance over quantity, (II) values transparent and ethical research processes and openness of results, and (III) recognises the scientific and societal impacts beyond the short-term. Knowledge and technology transfer will continue to be essential activities at LASIGE. Building on the successes of the past, a concerted effort will be put in place to keep attracting collaborations with companies and promote and support the creation of start-ups that build on the technology developed by LASIGE researchers. Driven by our commitment to addressing core challenges in CS for societal benefit, we prioritise our impact across three key dimensions: healthcare, sustainability, and inclusion and accessibility. To support this commitment, LASIGE will provide infrastructure and support to maintain services longitudinally and continue highlighting and rewarding outreach initiatives. Inclusivity, respect, and well-being are foundational principles at LASIGE and are broadly supported to ensure a healthy research environment for all. LASIGE’s excellent track record is challenged to new heights by its ambitious strategic plan paving the way for transformative impacts on a global scale. _
