Abstract
IHA takes art history as a field of knowledge of particular importance to the Humanities, encompassing the study of visual and material culture and contemporary artistic practices. It fosters collaborative, interdisciplinary, cross-institutional research to integrate current debates in art history informed by societal issues such as Eurocentric narratives and the effect of gender and decolonial perspectives upon them, the revision of high/low and centre/periphery divides, conservation and curatorial practices, art markets and criticism, the re-reading of modernism, the tensions between art and politics, or the challenges posed by urban regeneration and heritage.
IHA addresses Portuguese art history from a supranational perspective that entwines it with broader art historical questions and interrogates Portuguese historical relations with geographies across the globe. It promotes high-standard basic and applied research developed closely with undergraduate and graduate teaching programs, supports scientific employment, and offers advanced research-training opportunities for students. Its strategic plan responds to the EU 2020 and ONU 2030 Research Agendas and H2020 societal challenges in cultural tourism, museums and monuments, regeneration of historic centres, and use of emergent technologies, curatorial projects, pedagogical actions and creative media to channel scientific knowledge to wider audiences.
IHA's general objectives are:
1) To further its COMMITMENT TOWARDS HIGHER EDUCATION AND ADVANCED TRAINING in collaboration with NOVA FCSH's Art History Department, CEDANSA and the AL IN2PAST.
2) To STRENGTHEN AND EXPAND STRATEGIC AREAS OF BASIC AND APPLIED RESEARCH by promoting seed and exploratory projects, attracting new postdoctoral researchers, and supporting clusters.
3) To promote and support a SUSTAINABLE STRATEGY FOR RESEARCH CAREER DEVELOPMENT, including but not limited to the FCT-Tenure program, creating employment and teaching experience opportunities at BA, MA and PhD levels.
4) To CONSOLIDATE THE INTERNATIONALISATION of Portuguese historiography and international discussions on Portuguese History of Art, disseminating knowledge through peer-reviewed, open-access channels and encouraging researchers' mobility.
5) To PROMOTE INNOVATION STRATEGIES, PARTNERSHIPS, AND SOCIETAL IMPACT, prioritising societal relations and laboratory capacity growth in particular through CEDANSA, IN2PAST and the Cultural Networks and Digital Transition project.
6) To target DIGITAL HUMANITIES IN ART HISTORY—PRESERVATION, CURATION AND DISSEMINATION OF DATA AND RESULTS by optimising digital resource management and use.
These objectives are grounded on four strategic foci that intersect IHA's RGs, in line with IN2PAST Thematic Lines and NOVA FCSH's strategic project:
1) ARTISTIC CIRCULATIONS AND CULTURAL TRANSFERS
2) MUSEUMS, COLLECTIONS, EXHIBITIONS AND MARKETS
3) MONUMENTS, MEMORY, AND ARCHIVES
4) PUBLIC POLICIES, COMMUNITIES, AND TERRITORIES
