Abstract
The Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on Justice (CIJ) is an R&D centre based at the Faculty of Law of the University of Porto (FDUP). It was founded in 1998 and began its activity in 1999.
CIJ has a cohesive, vibrant, and dynamic research community, with 116 researchers, of which 46 are integrated researchers, including renowned experts at national and international level, and 30 are junior researchers with high potential, who are preparing their PhD in association with the Centre’s activities.
For the period 2025-2029, CIJ has planned an ambitious research program, driven by excellence and rigor, under the motto "Justice with innovation and sustainability" aiming to advance science for the good of society.
Aligning with the UN's sustainable development goals, the program is structured around four main axes: 1) Rights, Society and Power; 2) Contracts, Business, and Markets; 3) Transnational Dynamics, Green and Digital Transition; and 4) Crime, Security and Victimization. These axes are platforms for the development of interdisciplinary work, bringing together researchers from different scientific areas around Justice.
CIJ values the autonomy of researchers and foresees the development of research on a diverse set of relevant topics in legal and criminological sciences. Recognizing the important and current challenges that reality poses, it also develops research projects with innovative methodologies in search of appropriate and sustainable solutions for the various social actors.
CIJ constitutes a research hub of national and international importance, with a presence in the most important international societies and scientific networks. It promotes the dissemination of research results in publications with high impact and according to COARA criteria, preferably in open access. It supports its members in organizing and participating in various scientific events with the most renowned researchers, national and foreign.
CIJ will put in place an active policy of integration and support for young researchers and doctoral students, through the implementation of a research career policy and involvement in all activities, in conjunction with FDUP.
The transfer of knowledge, advanced training, and the impact of its research on society, judicial agents, public institutions responsible for policymaking, or the private and social sector, are among its objectives.
CIJ follows the highest ethical standards in science, including the protection of privacy and personal data, and the promotion of inclusion and gender equality.
