Abstract

The Activity Plan of TEMA focuses on three mobilising projects: The Sustainable Manufacturing Solutions project is committed to advancing sustainable practices in manufacturing through innovative R&D initiatives across four key areas: Manufacturing Processes and Simulation, Nanomanufacturing, Bio-inspired Manufacturing, and Manufacturing for Circular Economy. The goal of Manufacturing Processes and Simulation is to enhance sustainability, efficiency, and productivity in industrial operations by studying advanced manufacturing technologies and simulation techniques. This includes delving into digital manufacturing, additive manufacturing, and novel 3D printing processes, alongside the development of simulation tools to optimize manufacturing processes and reduce waste. Nanomanufacturing seeks to harness nanoengineering principles to create sustainable manufacturing solutions with enhanced material properties. Research will focus on nanofabrication processes, the development of nanomodular materials and systems, and the integration of nanotechnology into manufacturing processes while addressing safety and environmental concerns. The field of Bio-inspired Manufacturing aims to explore bio-inspired techniques for developing materials and products that are both environmentally friendly and compatible with living organisms. The application of biomimetic principles in manufacturing is highly significant because it promotes sustainability, efficiency, and the development of elegant designs. Lastly, Manufacturing for Circular Economy endeavours to promote circular economy principles in manufacturing by developing renewable energy sources, recyclable materials, and optimizing process management strategies to minimize resource consumption and waste generation. The project Technologies for Wellbeing aims to tackle societal challenges by leveraging innovative technologies to enhance healthcare, environmental sustainability, and urban living. This is achieved through two main objectives: Multiscale Technologies and Devices for Medicine, Environment, and Energy, and Innovative Technologies for Smart and Resilient Cities. In Multiscale Technologies and Devices, the goal is to develop innovative solutions for improving healthcare, environmental sustainability, and energy efficiency. This includes research into sustainable and functional nanocomposites, nanofluids, personalized biomaterials, and automated biomanufacturing processes. On the other hand, Innovative Technologies for Smart and Resilient Cities seeks to develop and implement technologies that enhance the quality of life, sustainability, and efficiency in urban environments. This encompasses research on digitalization for transportation systems, energy-efficient solutions, smart water management systems, automation systems, and collaboration with city planners and industry partners for scalable smart city implementations. The research infrastructure project, promotes the provision of services.
