Abstract
CQVR conducts research in both fundamental and applied fields of Chemistry, leveraging scientific knowledge for the welfare of society. Our mission also includes providing exceptional training programs, fostering collaborations with the industrial sector, and engaging in outreach activities. Our team comprises 65 members organized into four distinct research groups: materials chemistry, applied organic chemistry, environmental chemistry, and food chemistry& biochemistry.
Aligned with pressing global societal challenges and sustainability goals, such as food security, industrial innovation, green energy, and clean water, the research conducted at CQVR will focus on the following areas:
* Development of novel functional materials (organic, inorganic, or hybrid) with enhanced properties for applications in optical and electronic devices, sustainable transportation, energy-efficient technologies, and advanced medical therapies.
* Innovation in environmental technologies aimed at valorising agro-food by-products, monitoring environmental risks to soils and aquifers, and treating agro-industrial wastewaters for potential reuse.
* Creation of new clean-label food formulations and implementation of innovative practices and technologies to enhance food quality, promote health, and ensure rigorous monitoring of the chemical and toxicological safety of food products.
While these research areas bear global significance and impact, some fields hold particular importance for the Northern Region, nurtured through partnerships with local enterprises. Our history of successful collaborations with companies has resulted in numerous patents and effective knowledge transfer licenses, particularly in domains such as food quality, wastewater treatment, and eco-efficient waste management. These accomplishments have garnered the trust of various industries, facilitating the enhancement of their international competitiveness, job creation, and contributions to the nation's economic growth.
CQVR actively supports various master's courses and participates in three PhD programs in collaboration, some with other universities, attracting students from interdisciplinary fields such as biochemistry, oenology, food science, environmental science, genetics, and bioengineering. These fields align with the Unit's focus areas. To foster multidisciplinary research, CQVR aims to expand into complementary domains like biochemistry, bioengineering, and physics, establishing new partnerships with researchers from and outside UTAD.
A primary objective for CQ-VR is to enhance its international collaborations and forge new partnerships to elevate the Unit's scientific recognition. Special emphasis will be placed on promoting research staff mobility, integration in international networks, and organizing international scientific conferences in Vila Real, leveraging the allure of the Douro region.
