Abstract

The Research Center for Physical Activity, Health and Leisure (CIAFEL) is a Research Unit integrated into the national R&D system, financed by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and located at the Faculty of Sports of the University of Porto. CIAFEL's missions are to promote and support basic and applied research projects in the interface areas of Physical Activity and Exercise with Health, promoting the production and development of scientific knowledge, bringing together activities of a scientific or scientific-technological nature, as well as initiatives related to the communication, dissemination, updating, improvement or specialization of knowledge, to improve human health. This mission must be articulated with responses to public health policies for populations. Framed in the previously mentioned missions, CIAFEL's objectives are: a) Leverage the development of scientific research, promoting the carrying out of research programs and projects using external, national, and international funding in socially relevant areas, such as i) growth, development, and aging, ii) health inequities, iii) genetic, environmental and behavioral determinants of health and disease iv) understanding disease mechanisms, to prevent and treat ensuring better overall health outcomes. b) Collaborate with other R&D institutions, national and foreign, through projects and scientific exchange networks; c) Actively participate in advanced training of human resources, particularly in master's and doctoral programs and in non-degree courses; d) Promote and participate in the transfer and valorization of scientific and technological knowledge produced relevant to the promotion of health through the provision of services to the community and the carrying out of training activities; e) Communicate and disseminate research results to society in general and the technical-scientific community; f) Promote coordination with institutions and bodies responsible for defining public policies; g) Promote the scientific employment of young researchers; h) Replenish appropriate material resources for research and provision of services; i) Create conditions for financing from the European Union or other international entities for R&D activities. CIAFEL values the evaluation of results, which is why it aims to maintain high indicators of scientific productivity, advanced training, consultancy, and community outreach.
