Abstract

IVAR's mission is to develop knowledge and technology to address geological hazards as global problems, in particular volcanology, and to shape the next generation of researchers and front-runners capable of serving the needs of Society. It’s main objectives are: -To promote basic and applied research in the domains of Volcanology and Risk Assessment; - To undertake experimental development; - To design, develop, implement, and manage systems for the monitoring of natural phenomena, to support decision-making in the field of Civil Protection; - To promote the conservation and protection of geological and volcanic landscapes; - To encourage scientific cooperation with national and international institutions, public and private; - To promote and ensure the qualification of human resources through high-level education and professional training; - To promote the dissemination of scientific research results at national and international levels. The mission and objectives of IVAR are well defined and focused on the object VOLCANO. The research team, however, is very diverse and encompasses a wide range of scientific areas. The diversity of expertise applied to the same object of study fosters the exchange of knowledge and experiences that enrich the team and allow the development of real transdisciplinary research projects and technological developments that would otherwise be difficult to implement. IVAR vision for 2025-29 is to EMBRACE THE EMERGING TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENTS to consolidate its current capabilities and advance its innovation potential , leveraging the Data-Information-Knowledge-Wisdom pyramid to ensure that insights from raw data are translated into actionable wisdom. Earth observation techniques are paramount for assessing the behavior of Earth’s Systems, and within the scope of Volcanology and Geological Hazards, IVAR generates CONTINUOUS STREAMS OF DATA FROM ITS MULTI-PARAMETRIC MONITORING SYSTEM. This framework provides the need and the right environment for the development of new approaches to monitoring, integration of Remote Sensing, and integration of DATA SCIENCE AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE to generate information, used to create knowledge, which in turn supports wisdom in crisis management. 3 steppingstones were devised to achieve the envisioned developments: RESEARCH TRANSLATION – to translate research outcomes into impactful results, both in the scientific community as in the social commitment. INTERNATIONALIZATION – to leverage IVAR’s interdisciplinary research culture and strong international partnerships to expand its global presence, foster collaboration, and enhance knowledge exchange. HUMAN CAPITAL DEVELOPMENT – to increase human potential both in IVAR, through training and career development, and in society through education and outreach.
