Abstract
UNIDEMI is a Research and Development Unit in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering fundamentally anchored within the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering of Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade NOVAde Lisboa (NOVA FCT), with 49 Integrated Researchers. UNIDEMI has undergone rapid and successful growth, aiming to produce research with a high impact on the global scientific community, industry, services and society.
UNIDEMI's vision is to achieve world-class excellence in research, development and entrepreneurial in the scientific areas of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Engineering and Management. UNIDEMI's Strategic Objectives (SO) are:
- Achieve Excellence in Research and Development (R&D) Activities
- Develop Excellent Multidisciplinary and Internationally Networked Research Teams
- Increase Value Creation from Exploitation and Dissemination of Scientific and Technological Results.
UNIDEMI's strategy focuses on developing 3 core scientific and technological competencies, which will be organized into 3 informal research groups.
In the Advanced Manufacturing (AM) group, there is a significant emphasis on core competence in advanced manufacturing processes, addressing metal additive manufacturing, welding, friction stir processing, composites machining, and destructive and non-destructive testing across various materials.
In the Design, Experimentation and Simulation Engineering (DESE) group, core competences span scientific domains, including topology optimization, fluid dynamics, bond-slip models for different structural materials, multibody system dynamics, optical and digital measurements, inverse and reserve methods for engineering, theory and methodologies of design, geometric dimensioning& tolerancing, 3D modelling and prototyping, fracture mechanics, alongside fatigue and failure analysis.
In the Sustainable and Digital Factories & Services (SDF&S) group, there are vertical scientific research areas, focusing on specific themes of industrial systems design, such as operations management, supply chain management, decision making, human-system interaction and ergonomics, occupational safety and security, quality engineering, lean-green, resilient and risk management, innovation, digitalization and entrepreneurship.
UNIDEMI will foster multidisciplinary research teams and leverage national and international networks, including the associate laboratory LASI. To reinforce its research capacity, UNIDEMI aims to expand the 2 PhD programmes in Industrial Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. It also aims to further access industrial funding by continuing to work with multinational companies and enhancing value creation. UNIDEMI will enhance visibility by hosting world-class scientific conferences and following Green Open Access. Additionally, dissemination and communication of results will be emphasised on social media and other media.
