Abstract
The Chemistry Center of the University of Minho (CQUM) is a subunit of the School of Sciences. Currently, it comprises 28 integrated members (22 academics and 6 researchers) that conduct highly collaborative research in multidisciplinary topics. Considering the members' expertise acquired over the years and their scientific affinities, the vision for 2025-2029 is to establish a leading force in Chemistry research, guided by the motto "New Methods, New Molecules, and New Materials" for a sustainable future. The overarching objectives are to search for pioneer innovative chemistry solutions addressing Environmental, Energy, and Health challenges, foster international collaboration and visibility, excel in scientific training, strengthen industry partnerships for innovative research outcomes, and promote scientific literacy in chemistry among citizens. Aligned with United National Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goals 3, 7, 11, and 13, CQUM aims to develop New Methods rooted by Green Chemistry principles. This involves sustainable synthetic pathways, catalysis, and advanced electrochemistry techniques, supported by machine learning models and novel analytical methods. Expansion of expertise in green synthesis is vital to achieve these goals. The focus on New Molecules involves leveraging CQUM's strengths in medicinal chemistry, environmental/agricultural applications, and technological innovations. From pollution control to drug discovery and materials science, CQUM aims to produce impactful molecules and biomaterials through innovative synthesis and modification approaches, embracing the principles of circular economy. CQUM will be involved in the discovery of advancing New Materials, starting from natural sources and waste valorization, using sustainable approaches to propose the functional materials of the future. These materials will find applications in energy devices, sensors, biomedical technologies, and sustainable construction materials.
International collaboration is central to CQUM's strategy, with active participation in conferences, networks, and collaborative projects. Leveraging state-of-the-art equipment through partnerships will enhance research capabilities and visibility. Advanced scientific training programs will be offered, supported by individual funding applications and industry partnerships.
To enhance visibility and societal impact, CQUM will engage in science communication, open science practices, and public outreach initiatives. Promoting gender equality, diversity, and inclusion aligns with EU policies and fosters a vibrant and inclusive research environment.
In summary, CQUM's strategic roadmap encompasses cutting-edge research, international collaboration, scientific training, industry partnerships, and societal engagement, positioning it as a frontrunner research unit with a global impact.
