Abstract

CESEM leads musicological research in Portugal, in a variety of areas including historical musicology, cultural heritage, critical theory, philosophy and sociology of music, music psychology and pedagogy, creation, performance practices and music technologies, as well as music and media studies. Particular attention has been given to research on Portuguese/Iberian music and its relations with Brazil. CESEM members are internationally recognised for their professional quality and are part of networks and editorial boards of musicological journals. The general objectives of the centre are to create a research environment conducive to teamwork, to support qualified researchers, to promote collaborative projects related to Portuguese/Iberian and Latin American music, to develop sustainable digital resources, to promote high quality training and to encourage interdisciplinary work. CESEM's strategy for the period 2025-29 aims to consolidate the presence of highly qualified researchers at the centre by recruiting new researchers (especially at the start of their career) and funding a chair (FCT Tenure), as well as supporting high-level training at NOVA FCSH and U. Évora by offering doctoral scholarships and resources for collaboration with foreign professors. CESEM also plans to launch internal competitions for small research projects, to make the skills acquired available to public institutions and civil society (through the IN2PAST laboratory), to establish a new hub in Mafra, to make the "Thematic History of Music in Portugal and Brazil" available online, to strengthen its leadership in the production of digital resources, and to continue supporting the journals and collections of musicological studies published by the centre and made available in open access. Special attention will be given to the organisation of international conferences, the participation of researchers in international scientific and artistic events, the publication of research results in open access, the inventorying, cataloguing and digitisation of sources, taking into account the problems of digital sustainability, the critical editing of music and other texts, the scientific consultancy of artistic productions, the improvement of relations between research, training, artistic creation and community intervention, the development of Portuguese-Brazilian cooperation, partnerships with public and private institutions and dissemination networks. Once the budget has been approved, a plan of activities will be drawn up and monitored by the Board of Directors. Regular meetings of the Scientific Council and visits by external consultants are also planned in order to strengthen the effective implementation of the proposed programme.
