Abstract

UNIARQ is a research centre of the School of Arts and Humanities (SAH) of the University of Lisbon dedicated to archaeological research from a multidisciplinary perspective, covering fundamental themes ranging from the process of hominization to the contemporary world. Out of a total of 171 members, 30 are integrated PhD researchers, 30 are PhD students, of which 27 hold a PhD grant, and 111 are collaborators. Among its integrated members, 14 work at SAH while the rest work in other Portuguese and international institutions, attesting UNIARQ's enlarged network. UNIARQ is committed to research excellence and its primary objective is to investigate past societies spanning from the earliest hominins to the Contemporary period. While the geographical focus primarily on the Iberian Peninsula, and social connections across the Mediterranean and Atlantic from the first settlers to the terminus of Roman Empire, research extends beyond this chronological and geographic scope, including excavations in Japan (Project Be-Archaeo), fieldwork and study of artifacts collections from Africa (Angola, Guinee, Cape Vert) and Brazil. Hominization, first settlers and hunter-gatherer societies, agro-pastoralist groups and first complex societies, oriental stimulus and indigenous populations during Iron Age, the formation of Lusitania as a Roman province, the fall of the Empire and the Islamic Iberia, the rise of a global economy and the role of western Africa territories and people, resistant and resilient groups and environments in the contemporary world are among UNIARQ main research themes and fieldwork – survey and excavations – is directed by UNIARQ members in several parts of the world. UNIARQ projects rely on transdisciplinary methodologies and transdisciplinary teams in which young PhD students are hosted. The training of new generations and their impact in UNIARQ digital transition coexist with UNIARQ special focus on material culture, environmental approaches and social identities of the Past. UNIARQ researchers are committed to the principles of FAIR science and produced a substantial number of high-impact articles, establishing itself as a leader in scholarly output within the field. UNIARQ edits its on journal Ophiussa, Scopus indexed since 2023, and a monographic serie Estudos e Memórias, both on open access at the University of Lisbon repository. UNIARQ's dissemination efforts extend beyond academia, utilizing its website, social networks, and outreach activities to engage the public with archaeology and heritage, promoting citizen science and contributing to this shared European goal.
