Abstract
The Institute of Sociology of the University of Porto (IS-UP) was founded in 1989 with the aim of promoting research in Sociology, while also gathering the heritage of other social sciences. Since 2002, the IS-UP integrates the network of scientific units of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and, especially since then, it has experienced a path of growth and qualification that has led to an intense activity, developed on a daily basis by more than forty integrated researchers, several FCT PhD fellows and more than fifty collaborator researchers.
Under the guidance of the coordinator and with the support of the Unit’s Executive Committee, the IS-UP’s scientific policy is defined by the Scientific Board, taking into account the opinion of the Researchers Assembly and of theExternal Scientific and Advisory Committee. Based on a culture that encourages group dynamics and collective work, while always respecting individual freedom and choices, IS-UP is proud to offer all its researchers a research environment in which intellectual freedom and sociological innovation are fundamental tenets.
IS-UP is organised into two research groups, dedicated to the study of Social Recompositions, Culture and Territory and Work, Family and Social Policies, united around what is the main cross-cutting axis of their work, the socio-economic development and the development of public policies, in a comprehensive effort to produce knowledge on the multidimensional processes that construct inequalities in contemporary societies.
Keeping focused on fundamental research and on providing socially relevant services, for the period 2025-2029, IS-UP aims to consolidate the dynamics of analysis and monitoring of the social recompositions of the Northwest of Portugal, particularly in line with the Sustainable Development Goals nos. 4, 5, 8, 10, 11, 12 and 17 of the United Nations 2030 Agenda, and with the perspective of Public Sociology, particularly committed to broadening the audience of science and to the enlightened debate on major public policy issues.
In particular, the IS-UP has set 10 strategic objectives for 2025-2029:
1) Selectively strengthen the research team.
2) Lead projects with an international scope.
3) Create the Northwest Social Observatory.
4) Create the Observatory of Art and Culture in Universities.
5) Support scientific employment and career development.
6) Strengthen the ongoing plan for the wide dissemination of sociological knowledge.
7) Support the openness, sharing and reuse of research data.
8) Host and train young researchers, in collaboration with the Doctoral programme in Sociology of FLUP.
9) Reinforce the international dissemination of research results.
10) Strengthen the collective and horizontal working culture that unites IS-UP members.
