Abstract
The Center for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES) conducts high-quality research contributing to understanding societal challenges and global threats while providing evidence-based policy recommendations. From 2025 to 2029, CIES aims to strengthen its research infrastructure, including observatories and laboratories, while concentrating on four thematic areas. These areas are aligned with researchers' expertise and international initiatives, allowing for flexibility, autonomy, creativity, and innovation.
Post-pandemic research and systems thinking emerge as a priority, given the profound societal changes wrought by the pandemic. CIES advocates for interdisciplinary research to comprehend the complexities of social systems, including addressing climate crises, wars, and large-scale societal transformations, emphasizing adaptive capabilities and risk reduction.
In ensuring inclusive societies, CIES targets understanding and mitigating various forms of inequality, such as those related to youth, gender, ethnicity, and employment insecurity. Creative expressions and climate-friendly lifestyles are identified as means to challenge social inequalities and promote diversity and accessibility.
Promoting a data-rich future for the social sciences is pivotal for CIES. The observatories/laboratories collect, analyze, and disseminate data, as well as provide evidence-based research to decision-makers to develop public policies and address societal problems. CIES will provide innovative methodological training and technical skills to address arising challenges from digital transformation of society such as artificial intelligence, job displacement, and the digital divide.
Democracy is facing challenges worldwide, including authoritarianism and disinformation. CIES endeavors to understand and address these issues by mapping voting behavior, combatting fake news, and promoting media literacy. These efforts intersect with EU societal challenges and the green and digital transitions.
The dissemination of research results is ensured through publications, the organisation of national and international meetings and the articulation between teaching and research through the management of doctoral programmes and other advanced training initiatives. The Centre promotes interdisciplinary partnerships and, through the SocioDigital Lab and Iscte Knowledge and Innovation (CVTT), will address future challenges collaboratively.
Our objectives for 2025-2029 focus on producing excellent research, promoting international collaborations, high-quality advanced training research programs, and securing researchers into career positions to produce knowledge about current social problems with policy impacts.
