Abstract

Over the next five years, 2025-2029, CFE will strengthen its commitment to ecology and sustainable development, which are the pillars of its strategic mission. This commitment will be maintained through a concerted effort to strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration, bringing together expertise from the natural and environmental sciences, social sciences, and humanities. By fostering cross-disciplinary interactions, the CFE aims to effectively address the complex challenges faced by people and the planet. CFE’s research and development agenda will remain dynamic and responsive to emerging ecological and societal issues. Investments will be made in cutting-edge technologies and methodologies to ensure that CFE remains at the forefront of scientific innovation. Furthermore, CFE will expand its advanced training programs, offering more advanced courses and introducing new areas at the MSc and PhD level, to train the next generation of researchers and practitioners. These courses and programs will emphasise interdisciplinary perspectives and provide students with practical experience to prepare them for real-world challenges. International collaboration will be a key focus for the CFE over the next five years, as it seeks to consolidate resources, expertise, and networks to address global environmental issues. The Centre will actively participate in national and international research projects and strengthen collaborations with international partners to increase the visibility and impact of its research. A collective commitment to publishing high quality research in reputable, high-impact journals will be maintained, supported by resources to facilitate the publication process and increase the visibility of CFE's scientific output. Collaboration with the associated laboratory TERRA will continue to be a priority, focusing on coordination of joint research activities and knowledge transfer to the agricultural and forestry sectors. Efforts to transfer knowledge and technologies to the regional and national economies will be strengthened, in particular to promote ecological knowledge relevant to the transition of food systems towards sustainability. The CFE will also expand its network of agrifood-related Living Labs in the centre and north region, integrating several European-funded research projects to foster innovation and collaboration with stakeholders. In addition, CFE will continue its active participation in the coordination of the new Sea Centre (Centro do Mar), focusing on initiatives in aquaculture and sustainable fisheries, contributing to the growth and success of the FAST initiative. Through these strategic initiatives and partnerships, the CFE will continue to play a leading role in ecological research, sustainable development, and knowledge transfer, both nationally and internationally.
