Abstract

CERENA's mission is to develop excellent research related to the sustainable use of natural resources, including energy, primary and secondary materials, as well as their impact on the environment. CERENA uses an approach that is simultaneously inter- and multidisciplinary and multi-scale, from the molecular level to the planetary scale, where researchers from complementary scientific areas - Applied Sciences and Earth, Chemical and Materials Engineering - converge towards the same goals. CERENA develops solutions to current societal challenges, namely those related to climate action, environment, health, raw materials and resource efficiency, safe, clean and efficient energy. Our research contributes to achieving sustainable development goals. Currently, CERENA has 57 integrated researchers, 57 PhD students and 50 collaborators, grouped in three main scientific areas: Raw Materials, Environment and Energy. Advanced training and research are our main activities. CERENA has a continuous strategy of strengthening its team by consolidating scientific careers and hiring young talent. We intend to strengthen the support given to career development with the implementation of a Career Board, which will complement the existing science management and communication services and competitive funding prospecting. CERENA has an ambitious but realistic hiring plan, which include hiring tenure-track Auxiliary Researchers and Assistant Professors, fixed-term contracts for young researchers and two cohorts of PhD students. The research carried out at CERENA is mainly applied, computational and experimental, with the support of 5 CoreLabs: GeoLab, ChemLab, MILab and the ITLab at IST and the Geo-Resources and Geo-Environment Lab at FEUP. We plan to upgrade our computing capabilities with the implementation of a high-performance computing infrastructure. Our geosciences and geoengineering laboratories are part of C4G, the national scientific infrastructure, and we are associated with the national Mineral Resources Cluster, collaborating with other R&D units, institutions and companies. All our laboratories provide services to the scientific and educational communities, industry and society in general. CERENA will continue to collaborate with industry in the search for more sustainable, eco-innovative and competitive engineering solutions, from a circular economy perspective. We will continue to expand the network of international partnerships, promote the participation, and hold international conferences and endorse international mobilityof our researchers, to expand international collaborations and obtain more competitive funds for projects of crucial relevance for the advancement of knowledge in science and technologies. We will continue to promote scientific culture, particularly among younger people, through recreational activities and scientific dissemination (e.g., in IST's geoscience museums or in collaboration with other institutions).
