Abstract

ISISE was created in 2007 involving the Civil Engr Depts of the Universities of Coimbra (UC) and Minho (UM). The Unit is based on strong leaderships, with a proven record of internationalization, contracted research, cooperation with industry, top level dissemination in the international arena. Therefore, outstanding fundamental and applied research has been the driving force of ISISE, which was evaluated in 2014 and in 2018 as EXCELLENT. The vision of ISISE is to improve SUSTAINABILITY AND RESILIENCE OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT, aiming at increasing the Structural and Functional performance of Civil Eng Works and Construction Products. A perspective of advanced technology and knowledge-based economy, ranging from materials to systems with a holistic life cycle approach that includes social, environmental and business aspects, is adopted. UN SDGs 3, 7, 9 and 11-14 are seen as guidelines for the strategy of ISISE. Scientifically, ISISE envisages excellence in research focusing in Sustainability and Resilience of the Built Environment with a goal of improving its Structural and Functional Performance, through intervention in 4 strategic areas, namely SUSTAINABLE CITIES, INFRASTRUCTURES, INDUSTRY and OCEAN, directly linked to UN-SDGs. Resilience to extreme events and climate change, decarbonisation and circular economy, digitalization and Industry 4.0 are underlying concerns. SUSTAINABLE CITIES addresses Buildings (new construction and structural and functional rehabilitation), Heritage and Urban Environment. In INFRASTRUCTURES (Renewable Energy, Roads/Railways, etc) structural and functional innovation and management are addressed. For INDUSTRY, in the scope of Civil Eng, focusing on innovation in Materials, Processes and Products, through clean production strategies, sustainable materials innovative approaches (e.g. additive manufacturing). OCEAN focuses in Civil Eng works, related to management, Logistics, and solutions for Offshore and Ports, addressing sustainability and resilience as a main objective. This involves 4 RGs, dedicated to Functional Performance, Historical and Masonry Structures, Structural Composites and Steel and Mixed Construction Technologies. ISISE aims at excellence, promoting a strategy focused on publication of high-impact research in the highest-quality journals in the respective fields. To implement these strategic lines, specific actions are envisaged in terms of Advanced Training, Human Resources, Dissemination, Infrastructures and Funding. These involve: Active involvement in MSc and PhD programmes focused in the research areas defined; Application for post-doctoral and doctoral grants / contracts, R&D projects, and applied research projects and consulting activities incorporating research and knowledge transfer with private companies; Maintain high level dissemination initiatives (webpage, newsletters, reports), organization of international events, participation in international technical and scientific committees.
