Abstract

CRIA is the main Portuguese research centre in Anthropology, occupying a significant position in the institutional field of Portuguese social sciences. It is an interuniversity R&D unit - Iscte, NOVA FCSH, University of Coimbra and University of Minho, with shared management, fundraising, research dissemination, training and knowledge transfer capabilities. 4 Research Groups provide the broad organizational framework at CRIA: Circulation and Place-Making; Environment, Sustainability and Ethnography; Livelihoods, Politics and Inequalities; Practices and Politics of Culture. Transversal Thematic Lines build upon particular topics: Health; Visual Anthropology and Arts; Studies in Arab and Islamic Contexts; Religion; and South Asian Studies. Research, training and hosting benefit from a high Laboratorial dimension of the four laboratories, opening new lines of research and stimulating engagement with public institutions. CRIA makes a solid contribution to the knowledge of cultural and social dynamics in contemporaneity. Anthropological research in Portugal along with various geographical contexts (e.g. other European and Portuguese-speaking countries, India, South Africa, Bangladesh, Morocco, Mauritania), promotes comparative, articulated and transversal analyses on different spatial and historical scales - the landmark of CRIA´s scientific strategy. Interdisciplinarity and sub-disciplinary articulation support and complement this unique approach. Bringing together scholars from multiple and intersecting anthropological traditions, CRIA intervenes in the geopolitical restructuration of anthropological discourse and analysis, both in Portugal and internationally, playing a pivotal role in launching creative dialogues between bodies of knowledge frequently kept apart. CRIA advocates an independent approach towards knowledge production, unconstrained by the perspectives and rhythms imposed by political urgency, attentive to societal expectations, committed to deep, prolonged ethnographic enquiry as the basis for theoretical innovation - thus guaranteeing originality in their empirical and theoretical contributions towards the production and application of knowledge. This conviction guides a resolute engagement in domains of public concern: social, cultural and natural risks and the demand for fair policies towards more inclusive and sustainable societies. CRIA´s acknowledgement of culture´s empowering potential motivates its efforts towards knowledge-based, participative decision-making and its involvement in innovative cultural projects. CRIA´s ambition to ensure high-quality publishing in anthropology has been widely achieved through the peer-reviewed journal Etnográfica, and has been extended to Etnográfica Press, following Open Access and open science policies, thus demonstrating the centre’s commitment to socially responsible research.
