Abstract
BioISI is a research institute focused on integrative quantitative approaches to address biological problems at the forefront of life-science research.
By gathering scientists from bio-, chemistry, physics and computational sciences, BioISI benefits from a unique multidisciplinary environment to tackle emergent complex problems and societal challenges in the life sciences.
To address our vision – “Unravelling Multiscale Mechanisms in Biology” - BioISI research spans the different life organizational levels, from molecules to organisms and their interaction with the environment. BioISI experimental work for the 2025-29 period is thus organized in 3 research programs: (1) Structure and function of biomolecules; (2) Integrative molecular pathways and cellular networks; (3) Organismal and populational systems. These research programs convey our mission – “Achieving quantitative descriptions of biological systems towards tackling societal challenges” - our interests and expertise. To promote multidisciplinary approaches, each group within BioISI has identified a main and a secondary research program to which it contributes most. This strengthens the technological matrix of interactions and consistent dissemination of information, key goals of BioISI.
Along with innovative research, BioISI mission is accomplished through the continuous consolidation and support of its integrative axis: Technology& Instrumentation; Facilities & Services; Teaching & Training; Communication, Dissemination & Exploitation.
The Faculty of Sciences of Lisbon (FCUL) is the main host institution accommodating most of BioISI labs and facilities. Other hosting institutions (poles) include the reference public institute for health in Portugal (INSARJ) and the Univ of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD), of strategic relevance for the establishment of an inter-regional network to address specific societal topics. The national institute for agrarian and vet science (INIAV) is a partner institution of BioISI.
BioISI is a gender balanced UI&D that promotes equal opportunities and non-discriminating hiring policies. It is organized in a structure that will ensure adequate management of data generated by the research, training and service activities. FCiencias.ID is the principal managing host Institution of BioISI acting in coordination with all the hosting institutions ensuring efficient administrative procedures and financial flows.
