Abstract

ID+ aims to make a decisive contribution to a viable future in complex times, by applying the skills of design and innovative multidisciplinarity to current challenges in various scales. The UN’s Strategic Development Goals, the New European Bauhaus and the European Green Deal priority clusters for 2025-2027 are key references in this ambition. The new group structure of ID+ will address the above with renewed clarity, particularly with regards to the following challenges: 1. Shifting economies: design towards sustainable socio-economic growth. 2. Supporting Health, ageing and vulnerable demographics; 3. Anticipating, mediating and acting upon current, self-driven complexity in media and technology: design for humanisation; 4. Territorial and communal empowerment: design as an agent in local ecosystems; Earth-centered Design; 5. Intangible and material heritage; design towards multiculturality; 6. Devising pedagogical content and structures for the above challenges; promoting scientific knowledge and combating disinformation; 7. Ensuring the viability of design research and practice in future generations. For 2025-2029, continuity will be ensured in fronts that have proven particularly successful in the past: the diversity of funding bodies, diversification of bids, hosting international conferences, partnerships with international research centers, knowledge and technology transfer with business incubators, and the promotion of Open Science policies. Additional core actions for 2025-2029 include: - An international think-tank, EXPLORATORIUM, whose mission is to tap into emerging design fronts and intuitions (and applicability) nationally and internationally. This aligns with the FCT Exploratory Projects typology; - Hiring a researcher under the FCT Tenure program aligned with the above, addressing the roles of design in emerging scenarios. - Prospective work, led by an FCT Tenure in audiovisual media, regarding the exponential pervasiveness of digital tools and artificial intelligence - congregating and mediating Humanities and Social Sciences in a strategic dialogue with technological fronts; - A new PhD program: Design and Technology for Age-Friendly Cities and Transgenerational Built Environments. An FCT Tenure position request is also aligned with this Program. - The expansion of the current PhD in Design to the 2 ID+ Polytechnics. This hybrid institutional model of association is pioneering within design. - In both PhDs, further internationalisation (over 20 nationalities, 2010-2023); - A strategic consolidation of ties with the Global South, particularly the development of lusophone research fronts. - Leading international activities with The European Academy of Design, following the nomination of an ID+ Director as Vice-President; - An ID+ Director integrates the coordination board in Portugal of the Alliances of European Universities, furthering macro-strategic vision and action.
