Abstract

The Centre for Transdisciplinary Research Culture, Space and Memory (CITCEM) is a R&D Unit integrated into the Portuguese National Scientific System, funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT/UIDB/04059). Created in 2007, CITCEM brought together researchers from previous R&D Units based at the FLUP (Interuniversity Centre for the History of Spirituality, Institute of Modern History and Centre for Literary Studies) and the Archaeology Centre of the University of Minho and, in 2018, joined a group of researchers in Communication and Information Sciences, previously integrated in the R&D Unit, CIC.digital. Anchored in the domain of Human and Social Sciences, CITCEM is the largest R&D Unit at FLUP. Currently has 155 integrated researchers, 75 PhD students (60 FCT scholarship holders) and more than a hundred collaborators, linked to various institutions: U.Porto/FLUP, other public and private Universities, Polytechnic Institutes, Cultural Departments of Municipalities, Cultural Institutions and Associations - a highly qualified, multifaceted and motivated team, which crosses disciplinary areas, such as Archaeology, Communication and Information Sciences, Cultural and Literary Studies, Heritage, History, History of Art, Political and International Studies, among others. CITCEM focuses on the transdisciplinary study of themes related to memory and space, cultural heritage in its tangible and intangible forms, environmental history, rural and urban landscapes, population mobility, religious practices, information management, media studies, digital cultures, infocommunication literacy, creative industries and entrepreneurship, and a set of other themes that are interconnected to produce knowledge towards the national and international scientific community and to respond to societal challenges. The proposed strategic plan (2025-29), under the theme “Encountering communities (multi-species) and scaling dialogues”, enlarges the concept of communities (beyond humans), surpasses hegemonic discourses and crosses society-nature scientific dialogues. It aligns with the challenges proposed by the 2030 Agenda of the United Nations (UN) and the European Commission priorities, namely the ecological pact and resilience in the face of green and digital transitions, as well as the consecration of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-30). To respond to new strategic challenges, CITCEM was restructured into 7 groups: Education and Societal Challenges; Information, Communication and Digital Culture; Literature and Intercultural Dialogues; Tangible and Intangible Heritage; People, Markets and Policies; Sociabilities and Religious Practices; Territories Landscapes and Environment. Research is closely linked to postgraduate education, mainly the doctoral programmes in History, Heritage Studies, Literary, Cultural and Interartistic Studies, and Communication and Information Sciences.
