Abstract
SUSTAINABLE CULTURES: ACADEMIA, IMAGINATION AND THE WORLD OUT THERE
‘Sustainable Cultures’ is a new strategic project that claims cultures owe both their self-perception and external recognition not to intrinsic traits, but rather to cultural, linguistic, medial, and epistemic relations. It will consolidate CETAPS research by showing that, for a deeper understanding of Anglophone cultures, we need to focus on the interactions that gave them a global reach.
Our strategic project approaches cultural sustainability at 4 levels:
1. cultures provide communities with a sense of identity by relying on relationships.
2. also as objects of study, cultures are sustained by relational dynamics; their appeal to researchers – but also to broader readerships – lies precisely in their interactions.
3. the conditions that made Anglophone cultures thrive materially, but also as the continued objects of our inquiry, also sustain our intellectual resilience as a research unit.
4. by relaying research results, we extend the self-knowledge – hence, the sustainability – of our host communities by getting them to relate differentially to key traits in other cultures.
These 4 levels of cultural sustainability will guide our 6 Research Areas (RAs) and 7 Research Strands (RSs):
1. Anglo-Portuguese Studies RA, with Orientalism and Anglo-Portuguese (Post)Colonial Relations RS;
2. Anglophone Cultures and History RA; with Culture, Science and the Media | American Intersections RSs;
3. Shakespeare and the English Canon RA.
4. Mapping Utopianisms RA.
5. Relational Forms RA.
6. TEALS RA, with Intercultural Studies, Teacher Education, CLIL and Translationality RSs.
Cultural Sustainability will shape all our endeavours in research, advanced training, international networking, publication plans and public engagement. Our Digital Lab will be especially committed to integrating this rationale and maximizing our impact.
CETAPS' Strategic Goals for 2029 are in line with the host universities' core concerns and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, with a focus on Quality Education, Gender Equality, and Reduced Inequalities:
Goal 1: Reinforcing CETAPS’s cohesive research identity;
Goal 2: Fostering an ambitious research culture that advances knowledge and attracts high-quality researchers;
Goal 3: Ensuring transparent management, dissemination of results, equal opportunities, and accountability.
Goal 4: Further improving the quality of advanced training;
Goal 5: Further extending the Centre’s internationalisation through networks and joint projects;
Goal 6: Boosting knowledge transfer through conferences and publications.
Goal 7: raising awareness of our work through outreach and citizen science.
Goal 8: raising researchers’ awareness of open scholarship and ethical challenges in the Humanities, e.g. AI usage.
Goal 9: Implementing Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion policies.
Goal 10: Investing in knowledge and technology transfer through advanced digitisation.
