Abstract

The UIDEF - Research & Development Unit in Education and Training - is the education research center of the largest and most prestigious Portuguese university, the University of Lisbon (ULisboa). Established in 2008 by the Institute of Education (IE-ULisboa), UIDEF's mission is to generate significant knowledge to scientific communities, and to support knowledge-based changes in education systems, policies, and practices. UIDEF upholds a strong and effective relationship with national and international scientific communities, particularly within the European context and the Portuguese-speaking countries context. This is achieved through an involvement in numerous funded projects, networks, scientific associations, seminars, and conferences. Its strong ties to those geo-cultural contexts make UIDEF a key platform for North-South scientific cooperation in education. UIDEF values engagement with the domains of policy and public action in education, having its structure – named REDESCOLA - to facilitate the transfer and mobilization of knowledge in professional sectors, central and local administration, private organizations, NGOs, and other institutions involved in formal and non-formal education practices. UIDEF's activities are directly associated with the doctoral programs at IE-ULisboa, where it leads advanced training nationally for the scientific and educational systems, promoting qualification for educational research, innovation, and improvement in formal and non-formal education contexts. Currently, UIDEF conducts research under the moto «Thinking and Acting Education in Transition Times», encompassing four central areas: - Technologically enriched learning environments - New dynamics of professional induction - Empowerment of educational communities for inclusion - Transformations in the governing of education. To pursue these research lines, UIDEF brings together excellent researchers affiliated with IE-ULisboa and other higher education institutions, including the Faculty of Human Kinetics, where it has a management hub. With 55 integrated members, 25 collaborators, and 59 integrated PhD students, UIDEF provides an environment focused on continuing a robust development trajectory, aiming to achieve high international standards, promote the integration of new researchers, and foster the mobilization of knowledge in the contexts of education policies and practices.
