Abstract
The IHC is devoted to the study of contemporary history and its activity is centred around four groups: “Political History - Regimes, Transitions, and Memory”; “Economy and Society - State, Classes, and Gender”; “Culture - Power, Mediations, and Arts”; “History of Science, Technology, and Environment”. Its team brings together researchers at different career stages and PhD students who take part in the activities of our Platform for Advanced Studies.
While ensuring an atmosphere of thematic and methodological freedom and innovation, the IHC aims to continue expanding its research into new questions, sources and geographies. Taking advantage of the fact that it hosts several collective and individual projects with a comparative, transnational and global scope, the IHC is particularly interested in promoting two strategic areas over the next five years:
1. To problematise the geographic and chronological boundaries of modernity: seeking to overcome methodological nationalism, its strategy encourages missions to archives within and outside Portugal and partnerships with foreign universities on topics ranging from the history of anti-colonialism to the global links between labour and science; while maintaining its main focus on the 19th and 20th centuries, the IHC is committed to developing studies that extend into the more remote past, exploring problems like the longue durée of economic, social and environmental processes or the role of contemporary cultural objects in mediating relations with previous eras.
2. To value the role of archives as useful tools for historiography and as forms of heritage whose protection is a civic project. The IHC therefore intends to promote preservation policies and raise public awareness, especially of the collections most relevant to its research, such as archives of audiovisual material, archives related to the history of antifascist and anticolonial resistance (including oral history), personal and association archives, and archives located in Africa, starting with the repositories in the former Portuguese colonies.
Drawing on History and the social sciences, the IHC investigates the ways in which the past informs the contemporary world. It also researches how modernity uses and reshapes the past, having founded IN2PAST - Associate Laboratory for Research and Innovation in Heritage, Arts, Sustainability and Territory, based in Évora, Lisbon and Minho.
In line with the latest paradigms of Open Access and Open Science, the IHC will make available to the community not only its members’ findings and publications, but also data that could enable further research, especially through its Digital Humanities Laboratory and its History in the Public Sphere Program. The IHC also intends to strengthen its digital presence and the accessibility of its results, including for audiences with disabilities.
