Abstract

The CIDPCC is methodologically oriented on deconstructing traditional dogmatic and case law categories in criminal law, drawing knowledge about human behaviour from science and philosophy. This critical analysis aims to influence standards of justice and contribute to further reflections on communicative human behaviour. CIDPCC is focused on a continuous process of adaptation and reform of criminal law criteria, namely through: i) the discussion on the meaning and relevance of mental states (including the "unconscious" and mental disorders) in the context of criminal liability; ii) the comparison between medical practice criteria and criminal law criteria; iii) new approaches to sexual crimes; iv) the deconstruction of crime theory and AI; v) the development of a European criminal procedural guarantism; vi) the role of art in understanding and in the solutions of crime. The methodological orientation of the CIDPCC can be summarized in two fundamental traits: 1) the interdisciplinary approach of its research; 2) the necessity for innovative legal concepts and practices in its objectives and outcomes. Through this research methodology, CIDPCC generates new research topics, attracting new researchers from various backgrounds, such as legal historians, philosophers, physicians, psychologists, and artists. To realize this orientation, CIDPCC plans various research projects, some new, others already underway. These projects are still integrated within the three research groups into which the Centre's scientific activity is divided - RG 1: 'Structural Foundations of Criminal Normativity and Interdisciplinary Relations with Other Sciences and Philosophy'; RG 2: 'Criminal Law and Critical Theory of Society - Criminal Law and Democracy'; RG 3, 'New Challenges in Criminal Procedural Law' – but primarily reflect the Centre's research themes, in line with its nature. We highlight the following projects: The 'Psyche' project will address the significance of mentalistic concepts in criminal liability. The 'Hippocrates' project will assess, from a criminal criteria standpoint, the criteria used by clinicians in medical practice. The 'Athena' project will focus on crimes such as corruption and influence peddling, contributing to the defence of democratic values. The 'Pandora' project will concentrate on new phenomena of crime associated with the use of new technologies (like new AI systems). The 'Daphne' project will be integrated into the context of the European reform movement of sexual and gender crimes. The 'Themis' project will investigate the development of procedural guarantees from a European perspective. The 'Terpsichore' project will seek to relate art and social reintegration. The 'Calliope' project aims to understand crime through literature.
