Abstract

The new strategic plan is titled SOCIETIES IN TENSE CONNECTIONS and will focus on tensions and conflict in human societies. It maintains the idea that connectivity is constitutive of human history, but it chooses to think the social interactions as processes that generate entangled tensions. In Anthropocene era, environmental instability, and inequality across lines of class, race, and gender call for a rethinking of concepts. Emphasis will be placed on historicity and fluidity to understand the resulting processes of blending and overlapping. Within this conceptual framework, the main contributions will be concentrated in some areas. The broad scope of the RU research, acknowledged by EAB, enables to lead studies addressing cultural identity categorization throughout history, shaping real or imagined tensions, and contributing to explain past and present-day conflicts. The appropriation of heritage in colonial contexts will be considered in various geographies. Environmental History is a key area of development. Attention will be given also to Gender History, History of religions, Historiography, History of Universities, Maritime History boosting prior achievements. Priority will be given to increase collaborative work at international levels, fostering joint projects and the participation in networks involving partnerships with European, Asian, American and African institutions, thus continuing with previous commitments and achievements. The RU research agenda is aligned with the 5 MA and PhD programs on History in The School of Art and Humanities/U. Lisboa (History, Maritime History, History and Culture of Religions, Medieval and Islamic Mediterranean, Military History) and the inter-university program, PIUDHist, in which most of the RU integrated researchers engage in post-graduated teaching. RU’s research grants on selected subjects and on international networks as well as to field work carried out in archaeological sites, archives, libraries and museums abroad are expected. The RU will continue to integrate graduate students, BA students and start-up grants holders into national and international research projects and dissemination activities. International co-supervision and co-tutelage are being encouraged.
