Abstract
The LE@D activity plan for 2025-2029 aims to contribute to identifying new futures of education, particularly in distance education (DE), open education, and digital education, through research and knowledge transfer. It proposes advancing knowledge through national and international collaboration, advanced training, scientific education, and career development promotion.
The R&DU foresees the consolidation of its three strategic areas: Theories and Practices of Open and Distance Education, Education and Sustainability, and Education and Post-digital Issues. Research is privileged in DE and open education models for lifelong learning, the analysis of digital transition and intersections between technology, pedagogy, and DE, the study of educational policies for equity and inclusion, research on sustainable educational leadership, analysis of digitalization processes, particularly Artificial Intelligence, in distance learning. We also highlight the participation of LE@D in an international research line, crossing all three areas, on 'Educational and Societal Implications of Artificial Intelligence.'
Internationally, the R&DU aims to strengthen collaborations with networks, institutions, and researchers worldwide, especially with the Lusophone and Ibero-American communities, and increase researcher and student mobility. It also aims to enhance international visibility through participation in R&D projects and dissemination of research results.
In advanced training, the R&DU plans to develop new training models, support junior researchers through mentoring programs and support applications for FCT scholarship programs. These initiatives are part of a career promotion logic that also involves the integration of permanent researchers, notably through the FCT-Tenure program and strengthening collaboration with the host institution (UAb).
In the Open Science and Datafication domain, the R&DU will reinforce the promotion of open access to scientific knowledge, offer training for researchers and students, participate in open science networks, and publish in open-access journals with impact factors. The expansion of the RE@D journal is also planned.
To reinforce and deepen research activity, LE@D will develop the internal team articulation, associating veterans and early researchers in communities of practice. Alongside greater internal articulation, the change in R&DU leadership, now more distributed but cohesive, envisions inclusion and diversity as ways of being in research.
Knowledge transfer highlights partnerships for training and intervention through various open-access channels, including publications, the UAb's Open Repository, open repositories, conferences, and webinars.
