Abstract

CAMGSD has a fundamental research character and identity. Its research activity is in mathematics, with emphasis on mathematical analysis, differential equations and dynamical systems, geometry and topology, and mathematical physics. Its main goals are to advance mathematical knowledge at the highest level in a wide range of topics that include the following: • qualitative theory, nonuniform hyperbolicity, Morse–Smale structures, functional and difference equations, reaction-diffusion equations; • geometric mechanics and Hamiltonian systems, integrability of equations of mathematical physics; • variational problems and Morse theory, variational methods; • nonlinear partial differential equations, free boundary problems, contact problems; • ergodic theory, topological dynamics, zeta functions; • stochastic analysis, Markov processes, statistical mechanics; • harmonic analysis, sharp Fourier restriction theory; • complex analysis, operator theory, operator algebras; • differential and symplectic geometry; • complex, toric and Kähler geometry; • low dimensional geometry and topology, knot theory; • algebraic geometry, algebraic topology, category theory; • topological quantum field theory, gauge and higher gauge theory; • string theory, matrix models, resurgence, quantum foundations; • noncommutative geometry, geometric and deformation quantization; • mathematical relativity, black holes. To achieve these goals, the center will foster its activities through operational programs, namely the Visitors Program, the Scientific Exchange Program, the Seminars Program, the Scientific Employment Program, the Doctoral Program and the Undergraduate Stimulus Program. The Scientific Employment Program is intended for: (a) fellowships for young researchers with a PhD, building upon the strong capacity already existent in the center for launching their careers internationally; (b) work contracts for more experienced researchers, namely through the Decree-Law 57 and FCT’s CEEC Program; (c) applications to the FCT Tenure and Aliança programs for hiring permanent researchers of the highest scientific level and stabilizing their careers; (d) management and communication of science, promoting the ability of the center to attract international funding and support its members in activities related to writingand managing research projects. The center will also be actively involved in the advanced training of students enrolled in the Mathematics PhD Program of IST, as well as in its Mathematics MSc and BSc programs, leveraging the established expertise and experience of the members of the center. With the secured funding, the center intends to award at least 13 PhD scholarships and provide at least 25 research scholarships for undergraduate students.
