Abstract

The Information Sciences, Technology and Architecture Research Centre (ISTAR) is a decentralised research unit of Iscte-Instituto Universitário de Lisboa since 2014, and is a founding member of the Association Iscte - Knowledge and Innovation and of the Associated Laboratory SocioDigital for Public Policy. ISTAR's mission is to develop applied and interdisciplinary research with the aim of creating knowledge to solve contemporary human, organisational and societal problems. It adopts user-centred approaches to the development and evaluation of Information Technologies (IT) with an impact on society. ISTAR reinforces its strategic position as an international reference in multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research applied to real problems, providing computational approaches and digital services in the context of digital transformation for and with society. Since its foundation, ISTAR has stood out for merging the digital and physical worlds to tackle societal challenges, combining science and IT with the digital dimensions of architecture and urban life. In 2025-29 ISTAR has the following strategic objectives: SO1. [Excellence] Strengthen ISTAR's international recognition as a centre for excellent interdisciplinary research. SO2. [Respect] Foster a favourable, inclusive and equitable research environment that attracts and retains talented national and international researchers. SO3. [Impact] Establish partnerships with agents of society, companies, public authorities and academic networks around the world. SO4 [Resources] Increase funding for research activities, laboratory equipment, research support infrastructures and science communication support. SO5. [Audacity] Encourage innovation, disruptive research and creativity. SO6 [Education] Contribute to advanced, academic and professional training. Digital technologies underpin most of ISTAR's projects, supporting and linking research that often brings together experts from other areas and other partner organisations. ISTAR is home to researchers mainly from the fields of Informatics, Architecture and Mathematics, who are grouped together in a fluid organisation with 4 research groups: Digital Living Spaces, Computational Systems Modelling, Information Systems and Software Systems Engineering. From 2025 to 2029, ISTAR will prioritise the following strategic thematic research lines: Smart and Sustainable Communities, Digital Humanities, Social Simulation for Public Policies, Digital Transformation. In recent years ISTAR has consolidated its place on the national and international research and development scene and is now aiming for the size and structure that best serve its purpose, establishing itself as a relevant organisation in this system thanks to its uniqueness.
