Abstract

The Centre of Biological Engineering at the University of Minho (CEB) has undergone a significant transformation in recent years, adapting to the evolving landscape of the national scientific and technological system. On the verge of its 30th anniversary, CEB has consolidated as a mature, innovative and leading Portuguese research centre in the fields of Environmental, Food, Health and Industrial Biotechnology and Bioengineering, and since 2020 is the leading institution of the LABBELS Associate Laboratory. With a steadfast commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, our four research lines will keep tackling pressing global challenges. In the Environmental Biotechnology and Bioengineering thematic line, we are converting biowastes into renewable resources, combating pollutants with advanced nanomaterials, and pioneering the recovery of critical materials from end-of-life equipment. In the Food Biotechnology and Bioengineering thematic line, we are enhancing food safety and sustainability, exploring alternative protein sources, and developing personalized nutrition solutions. Regarding Health Biotechnology and Bioengineering thematic line, we are combating antibiotic resistance, advancing treatments for diseases like Alzheimer's and cancer, and refining bacterial cellulose-based biomedical biomaterials. In Industrial Biotechnology and Bioengineering thematic line, we will advance in the development of advanced biorefineries, leveraging lignin for value-added applications, innovating in eco-friendly textile dyeing, designing novel bioprocesses as alternatives to the traditional chemical industry for advancing circular economy. Beyond research, our plan includes fostering international collaboration, disseminating knowledge, and promoting scientific culture. Strengthening partnerships with international universities and companies, organizing seminars and workshops, and engaging in outreach initiatives will enrich scientific literacy and inspire the next generation of researchers. As we chart a course towards the future, CEB remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and inclusivity. By harnessing the collective expertise of our members and leveraging our newly fortified internal structure, we are poised to tackle the most pressing challenges facing society and emerge as a model of scientific excellence on the global stage.
