Abstract

The Institute of Biomedicine of the University of Aveiro (iBiMED) was founded in 2014, obtained its first evaluation and funding in 2015 and research activities began in April 2016. In 2019 iBiMED was evaluated by FCT with an overall rating of Very Good (second highest level). iBiMED has a team of 135 people, made up of 52 integrated members with a PhD (59% women and 41% men), 63 PhD students (78% women) and 20 researchers or collaborators, including 10 technicians (4 of them supported directly by iBiMED). iBiMED's main mission is to study ageing and non-communicable diseases in order to improve quality of life. To fulfil its mission, iBiMED has been structured around scientific ideas and its activities have been organised at two levels: i) individual projects assigned directly to Principal Investigators (PIs) and ii) Transversal Research Platforms (TRPs), supported by iBiMED, aimed at tackling complex challenges and supporting individual research groups. The laboratories are mostly organised as Open Space and TRPs, and the equipment is shared by the researchers, creating an environment conducive to research and fostering the sharing of ideas and collaboration. Over the next five years iBiMED will consolidate its important role in the central region, supporting a transversal research programme aimed at understanding and treating non-communicable human diseases. iBiMED and the partner Local Health Units will be strengthened through the recently created Clinical Academic Centre Egas Moniz Health Alliance (CAC-EMHA), leading to the establishment of multidisciplinary teams including scientists and health professionals. Another important wing that supports our objectives and that we will continue to develop is pre-clinical disease models. As well as being able to answer complex questions thus strengthening P5 medicine and having an impact on the lives of patients and their families. Within the scope of iBiMED's area of activity, taking into account its central role in the new CAC-EMHA and at the University of Aveiro, four priority areas have been defined: Cardiovascular and respiratory diseases; Infection and resistance; Neurosciences; and Muscle and bone diseases. iBiMED will be at the national forefront of biomedical, clinical and translational research, through a holistic vision of health, resulting in the development and implementation of 1) new measures, technologies and tools to detect/diagnose disease early and inform personalised treatments, 2) personalised pharmacological and/or non-pharmacological therapies to improve the management of the multiple challenges posed by non-communicable diseases; 3) strategic programmes with repercussions at local, national and international level.
