Abstract

CEMS-UL is a R&D Unit, hosted at FCUL, that follows the prestigious legacy of CMAF and CIO, and aims at playing a key role in the advancement of Mathematical Sciences in Portugal and abroad. The activity plan for the next five years, can be summarized as follows: Foster top-tier international research and global scientific partnerships. Uphold the tradition of nurturing Portugal's finest young mathematicians. Develop models and algorithms with practical applications in industry. Strengthen collaboration with FCUL's Mathematical Sciences Departments, emphasizing Post-Graduate programs. Effectively communicate research outcomes and engage in high-level outreach initiatives. The following research topics are highlighted: Mathematical Analysis& PDEs: Focus on Schrödinger equation well-posedness and elasto-plasticity modeling. ODEs & Dynamical Systems: Investigate Lyapunov exponents and stability in delay differential equations. Mathematical Physics: Explore hydrodynamical limits, discrete Radon measures, and quantum control. Geometry: Pursue differential, complex analytic and algebraic geometric studies. Mathematical Logic: focus in model and proof theory advancements. Algebra & Combinatorics: Investigate matrix theory and combinatorics of Young tableaux. Operations Research and Optimization: Develop formulations of integer linear programming and maintain collaboration with industry. We aim to develop the following new strategic areas: Strengthening links between Geometry, Representation Theory and Mathematical Physics. Develop research in Robust Optimization, and in Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence, with links to Computational Complexity. To increase international impact we will adopt quality-oriented publishing strategies and participation in international thematic conferences. We encourage Open-Access publishing on arXiv, RCAAP, etc. We will initiate a Series of “Distinguished Lectures” and foster international collaborations. Another goal is to increase postgraduate training capacity by giving prizes to the best theses, and incentives for the supervision of master and doctoral students, and for obtaining external funding, both at national and European level (e.g. ERC grants). Another fundamental pillar is the Unit's postgraduate program, and the attraction of young talented mathematicians. In the context of outreach, we will maintain community involvement through high level activities aimed at teachers, students and the general public. This strategy positions CEMS-UL as a center of excellence in Mathematical Sciences, driving innovation, collaboration and societal impact.
