Abstract
CICS.NOVA is a R&D unit with a national scope, operating on several scales. Its headquarters are located at NOVA FCSH, and presents four regional Hubs based at different higher education institutions: Minho University, Évora University, University of the Azores, and Leiria Polytechnic. CICS.NOVA's core research areas are sociology and geography, which intersect and articulate with other social and human sciences, life sciences and engineering.
The centre's scientific activities are carried out within the framework of Research Groups (RGs) and Observatories (Experimental centre for erosion and soils; Azores youth observatory; Technology assessment observatory; National observatory on violence and gender). The activity plan for 2025-9 proposes a realignment of the RGs according to six major research areas: RG1 - Inequalities, Citizenship and Gender; RG 2 - Organisations, Work and Employment; RG3 - Urban and Territorial Dynamics; RG4 - Sustainability and Socio-Ecological Systems; RG5 - Health, Population and Well-being; and RG6 - Education, Science and Culture. The RGs are aligned with the strategic plan for the coming years, based on the definition of four societal challenges and a set of specific objectives. Thus, by responding adequately to the challenges of (a) Climate Change; (b) Digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence; (c) Generations and Demographic Transition; and (d) (The Making of) Science for Society, CICS.NOVA is clearly committed to the future and to some of the most pressing issues facing the scientific community. This R&D unit is particularly well qualified to respond to these challenges, due to its multi-scalar nature; integration of different areas of knowledge and different territories.
CICS.NOVA’s overarching goals include leading scientific training and fostering sustainable scientific careers, establishing CICS.NOVA as an international authority in the study of complex themes, and conducting socially responsible research that spans various scales. As such, starting from an ambitious plan, with clearly defined strategies and activities, we aim to achieve a set of goals: (a) Consolidating the integration of CICS.NOVA's research and advanced training activities by institutionalising the Skills4Science Initiative; (b) Enhancing our capacity to attract and retain researchers; (c) Supporting the quality and scientific impact of our research by adhering to the best practices of Open Science; (d) Strengthening the social impact of our research through knowledge transfer, co-creation, and outreach activities. The activity plan maintains the importance of postgraduate training and scientific dissemination as integral functions of the R&D unit. Scientific activities will hold strong alignment with doctoral and master's programmes across the consortium's institutions. The scientific communication structure will continue to include a network of journals and a collection of books in the social sciences.
