Abstract

CHAM – Centre for the Humanities of NOVA FCSH and the University of the Azores (UAc) is an international benchmark in the Humanities and one of the main and largest centres in this research area in Portugal. It comprises 263 members, including 126 integrated PhD researchers and 49 doctoral students. Its members carry out their work within 8 Research Groups and 3 Thematic Lines. For 2025-2029, CHAM will discuss the representations of the human and humanity, tracing their evolution across different historical and cultural contexts. CHAM will examine the circulation of ideas and their material manifestations and will endeavour to probe the intricate relationship between the concepts of humanity forged by the West and the evolving paradigms of modernity across different temporal and spatial contexts. This scope encompasses an analysis of transoceanic exchanges, exploring how human communities have negotiated their relationships with natural environments. CHAM's interdisciplinary approach, drawing upon expertise from history, literature, art, politics, and philosophy, fosters synergies that enrich its research endeavours and offer novel insights into the complexities of human existence. To enhance its internationalization and research capabilities, CHAM will apply for competitive funding opportunities, including ERC Grants, MSCA-SE, and COST actions. Additionally, it will continue to develop projects and networks, collaborating in a cross-sectorial approach to broaden its reach, while publishing for its peers and the public. CHAM also prioritizes advanced scientific training, by supporting PhD programs and career development. It will intensify internal actions to support funding applications and mentoring opportunities. CHAM will continue to host its renowned scientific conferences and integrate colloquia within ongoing research projects. As an RU with high-intensity laboratory practices, CHAM will further develop existing and new digital infrastructures. It will invest in its library and contribute to central physical and digital resources; it will foster research supported by collaborative and transnational field work in its areas of expertise. Equally, in terms of knowledge transfer, CHAM will emphasize its fieldwork capabilities, collaboration with public and private projects, and knowledge dissemination to various societal sectors, including initiatives to strengthen ties with suburban communities. Ensuring researchers’ career stability is another key priority, with CHAM proposing positions for researchers and teachers in collaboration with departments and centres of NOVA FCSH and UAc via the FTC-Tenure programme. Gender and inclusiveness policies, effective data management, full open science, education, and outreach practices are integral to CHAM's ethos, promoting a culture of equity, sharing, and openness in the Humanities.
