Abstract

The Institute of Earth Sciences (ICT), established in 2014, maintains its pivotal role in advancing geosciences knowledge. As it enters its second decade, ICT continues to evolve, leveraging past experiences to propel itself forward within the international and national geoscientific communities. ICT's core mission revolves around the pursuit of knowledge in geosciences, aiming to deepen understanding of Earth's processes, environment, and resources. This commitment extends to fostering a resilient and sustainable future for both humanity and ecosystems worldwide. Looking ahead to the 2025-2029 period, ICT aims to enhance its effectiveness and impact in addressing societal needs. Four primary objectives have been outlined: i) Cutting-Edge Research; ii) International Collaboration; iii) Capacity Building and Training; iv) Publication and Dissemination. To achieve these objectives, ICT will focus its research on four Scientific Challenges: i) Earth Dynamics, life-support systems, and global changes; ii) Georesources for circular economy and energy transition; iii) Digital technologies and Earth observation; iv) Geoconservation and geoscience literacy. New initiatives include Estremoz Talks on Earth Dynamics (ETED), which will feature national and international experts discussing groundbreaking topics related with different processes and systems involved in Earth Dynamics. These events will be broadcast live on YouTube and recorded for later viewing, breaking geographical barriers between the three ICT poles. The ICT Academy, run by students and junior researchers, aims to transfer and disseminate scientific knowledge, fostering a positive, multidisciplinary, and inclusive working environment through various initiatives. In-person ICT events, such as the ICT Days, will continue to facilitate interaction among researchers, collaborators, and students, providing a platform for presenting and discussing recent results and achievements. Postgraduate training remains a priority, with several PhD and Master's programmes available, including an Erasmus Mundus Master's Programme. ICT researchers are committed to publish in leading international scientific journals and actively participate in global initiatives promoting open access papers. In summary, ICT's strategic vision for 2025-2029 encompasses cutting-edge research, international collaboration, capacity building, and dissemination, all underpinned by ethical principles, diversity, and equality. Through its initiatives, ICT aims to foster a collaborative, inclusive, and impactful research environment while upholding principles of openness and equality.
