Abstract

UNIAG is a multidisciplinary R&D unit that combines a range of scientific areas, from management and social sciences to tourism. UNIAG's mission centres on fostering applied scientific research in tourism, management, regional development, sustainability, innovation and entrepreneurship, governance, ICT, bridging the gap between theory and practice and transferring knowledge to society. UNIAG's main purpose is to drive innovation and entrepreneurship, thus contributing to the identification andpromotion of added value, competitive advantages and the development of the potential for excellence in the area of regional and cross-border action of the four Polytechnic Institutes. Knowing that some regions in the north of Portugal have a low population density, UNIAG plays an important role in improving the knowledge of the top management of different companies. Taking into account the strategy outlined, UNIAG aimed to promote smart, sustainable and inclusive growth, focussing on understanding and implementing mechanisms for resilient, participatory and creative societies. UNIAG's strategy is based on the following 2 pillars: (i) Excellence in research: improving research in UNIAG's scientific areas, boosting international publication, increasing articles in impact journals and international collaborations; (ii) Involvement with society: using our research capacity to respond to the needs of companies, developing solutions to their problems. Sharing academic knowledge with the general population beyond academia. The activity plan for the period 2025-2029 is organised into 7 main groups: (i) contributions to the progress and applications of knowledge; (ii) advanced training and scientific initiation of young students; (iii) promotion of the culture of scientific, technological and knowledge transfer; (iv) organisation of scientific events; (v) preservation, curation and dissemination of data and results (as provided for in the Open Science policy); (vi) actions of particular relevance to society, of a scientific, technological, cultural, social or economic nature); and (vii) internationalisation and networking with other HEIs or R&D units. The activities will be carried out by UNIAG members. UNIAG is managed in accordance with FCT's multi-annual funding rules, through a flexible organisation based on a Coordination Committee (made up of four senior researchers, one of them the Coordinator), a Scientific Council and an External Advisory Committee. This includes four well known experts from academia and public-private organisations: Nikolaos Pappas (University of Sunderland), Luís Pedro Martins (Tourism of Porto and Northof Portugal), Kata Váradi (University of Budapest), and Fernando Díaz Hurtado (Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María).
