Abstract

The C-Is strategic project for 2025-2029 focuses on the development of linguistic resources and knowledge for Portuguese as a pluricentric language. Particular attention will be paid to the creation of a large and balanced reference corpus for Portuguese and, partly based on this, lexicographic reference resources, linguistic descriptions for learners and educational resources for different varieties of Portuguese, especially national varieties with fewer resources. At the same time, we will endeavour to reproduce this work for languages in contact with Portuguese, especially in Portuguese-speaking countries. Existing linguistic resources for Portuguese are scarce compared to those for other European languages with a similar number of speakers and the same pluricentric status. The existing resources tend to be based on the Portuguese and Brazilian varieties, lacking representation of other varieties. C-I proposes to pursue the following objectives initiated in the previous funding cycle: 1) compilation of the CPLP Corpus, a balanced and multivariate reference corpus, and based on it; 2) lexicographicresources; 3) learning grammars; 4) educational resources for L1 and L2 Portuguese teachers. Given the impact of Artificial Intelligence in all areas, it is the responsibility of research centres, especially those in the field of Linguistics, to ensure that resources with a social impact, such as the dictionaries, grammars, databases, teaching and learning resources, developed under the strategic axes of the RDU, are accurate, unbiased, ethical and reliable. The impact of AI on national varieties and the status of pluricentricity are ongoing debates in the field and are lines of research that will be pursued in line with research on the strategic axes.
