Abstract

The mission of the Centre in the next five years is to consolidate its role as one of Europe's leading centres for the study of emerging political and ethical issues. Research objectives Objective (1): The theory of public goods The Centre will explore the theory of public goods and its relevance to the nature of collective welfare, justice, and governance by investigating the role of government and institutions in promoting the production and equitable distribution of public goods, the role of civic engagement and public deliberation in shaping policies related to public goods, and the mechanisms for holding decision-makers accountable to the public interest. Objective (2). Structures of justice and injustice CEPS aims to develop the previous work on theories of justice and individual rights into a unified politico-philosophical view that stresses the role of the moral structure of society both at the domestic and international levels. This approach focuses on formal structures of justice at home and abroad and their interplay with dimensions of non-institutional structural injustice at the domestic and international levels. Objective (3). Nature and Function of Ideology This research line concerns the study of ideologies in their contemporary manifestations and modes. The Centre will explore several closely related topics, including polarization, political partisanship, radicalization, and political emotions. Objective (4): The Future of Work Based on preliminary work on unconditional basic income, this objective will develop new ideas on the future of work, particularly how the new work landscape affects workplace democracy, equality, and worker domination. The aim is to define a theoretical framework based on relational equality and freedom from domination, identify its normative implications, and apply them to analyse and discuss policy solutions. Objective (5). Vulnerability and Power The Centre unit will investigate the link between domination, understood as asymmetry of power, and human vulnerability, as the human "susceptibility to be injured," to disclose horizons of social and political transformation. Objective (6). Digital Technologies A further objective is to focus on normative issues related to the increasing use of digital environments and technologies. The Centre aims to leverage an interdisciplinary perspective, informed by ethics and political science, to systematically analyze the risks and benefits arising from the digital world and technologies. Objective (7). Between Theory and Practice: The Case of Food The Centre sets the goal of creating a platform for discussing food challenges, with a specific emphasis on epistemic justice, climate change, sustainability, and global hunger, exploiting the different specializations of its members in collaboration with an international network.
