Abstract
MED is a large R&D unit located in the South of Portugal, rooted in the Mediterranean region and connected with rural areas, where challenges to agricultural and environmental activities are relevant and timely. MED’s mission is to PROVIDE KNOWLEDGE-BASED SOLUTIONS FOR MEDITERRANEAN AGRICULTURE, FOOD SYSTEMS AND ECOSYSTEMS UNDER PRESSURE. This envisages ensuring sustainable food systems, environmental and biodiversity conservation, development and ultimately quality of life and well-being.MED tackles complex problems derived from food production systems, intensive resources use, climate change and other environmental drivers. Main goals are: 1) IMPROVE RESOURCES USE EFFICIENCY, 2) IMPROVE SUSTAINABILITY OF FOOD SYSTEMS, 3) ASSURE ENVIRONMENTAL INTEGRITY, BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION AND LANDSCAPE MULTIFUNCTIONALITY, 4) PROMOTE ORGANIZATIONAL CAPABILITY, GOVERNANCE MECHANISMS AND INCLUSIVE DEVELOPMENT, 5) FOSTERING RESILIENCE, MITIGATION, AND ADAPTATION OF AGROECOSYSTEMS AND BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION TO ENVIRONMENTAL AND CLIMATE CHANGES. These are reflected into 7 thematic lines (TL) focusing on productive areas: 1) Sustainable crop production, 2) Mediterranean food& diet, 3) Montado & forest systems, 4) Animal production & health, and transversal topics, 5) Biodiversity & conservation, 6) Environmental & climate changes, 7) Governance & development.
MED’s activity plan for 2025-29 can be grouped as: Creating advanced knowledge and innovative solutions for sustainable agricultural and food systems, conserving biodiversity, answering to environmental and climate changes and minimising impacts: Problem-solving research oriented, systematic, multidisciplinary, using co-construction and knowledge transfer with and to stakeholders, impacting society, quality of life and wellbeing; Investing in timelytopics such as ecological restoration, soil health and conservation, efficient use of water, alternative crops and varieties, resilient and adapted to climate changes; Developing innovative and sustainable animal production strategies, in accordance with One-Health principles and goals; Promoting Agriculture 4.0 to manage water, fertilizers and other inputs contributing to increase farmers profitability and efficiency, while conserving biodiversity and being environmentally friendly; Investing in advanced training and career development; Internationalization through networks and funding; Organising high-quality scientific and societal events to promote scientific and technological culture; Committing to a working ambience that promotes gender equality and inclusion.
MED has unique characteristics: ECOSYSTEMS, where we are integrated. MULTIDISCIPLINARY, we are ONE but with different perspectives! TRANSDISCIPLINARY, immersed in the society with strong connections with stakeholders. INTERNATIONALISATION, with teams and individuals, participating in international consortiums and associations.
